JAY SLATER’S FINAL MOMENTS REVEALED AS MUM DEBBIE FINALLY LEARNS THE TRUTH

TENERIFE — More than two years after 19-year-old Jay Slater disappeared in the mountains of Tenerife, his mother Debbie Duncan has finally received an answer to one of the most painful questions surrounding her son’s death.

Did Jay suffer before he died?

According to forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd, who examined Jay’s case and appears alongside Debbie in a new Channel 5 documentary, the teenager’s injuries were so severe that they would probably have caused his death almost immediately.

The revelation has given Debbie some measure of clarity after years of wondering whether her son had been injured on the mountainside and left there to die.

JAY DISAPPEARED AFTER A NIGHT OUT

Jay, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire, disappeared in Tenerife in June 2024 while on holiday with friends.

In the early hours of June 17, he travelled to an Airbnb in the remote mountains with two men he had met during the holiday.

Later that morning, Jay contacted his friend Lucy Law.

He told her that he was lost, had no water and had injured his leg on a cactus.

His phone subsequently lost battery, triggering a huge search operation across the mountainous Rural de Teno area.

For almost a month, Jay’s family waited desperately for news.

Then, 29 days after he disappeared, his body was discovered at the bottom of a ravine.

HIS MUM FEARED HE HAD DIED ALONE

For Debbie, one question remained particularly painful.

She knew Jay had suffered a catastrophic fall, but she did not know exactly what happened during his final moments.

She worried that her son might have been badly injured and remained alive for some time before eventually dying alone in the remote mountains.

In the new documentary, Dr Shepherd addresses that fear.

After reviewing Jay’s medical evidence and injuries, he tells Debbie that the head injury was so severe that it probably would have killed him immediately.

“He wasn’t injured on the hillside dying slowly,” Dr Shepherd explained, according to The Sun’s report of the documentary.

For Debbie, that distinction was deeply important.

After years of imagining her son suffering alone, she could finally begin to understand that his death was likely much faster than she had feared.

WHAT THE POST-MORTEM REVEALED

Jay’s death became the subject of intense speculation after his disappearance.

Online theories suggested everything from kidnapping to drug-related violence.

But a second post-mortem examination found no evidence of strangulation or other deliberate harm, despite concerns reportedly raised by Spanish authorities during the investigation.

Dr Shepherd said neither post-mortem provided evidence that Jay had been deliberately attacked.

Instead, the medical evidence was consistent with a young man who became confused and disorientated before suffering a catastrophic fall in dangerous terrain.

At Jay’s inquest in July 2025, the coroner concluded that he died accidentally after falling in the mountainous terrain.

The cause of death was recorded as traumatic brain injury caused by the fall. Toxicology also found cocaine, ecstasy and ketamine in his system.

POLICE HAD ALSO CONSIDERED STRANGULATION

One of the new revelations concerns the investigation that followed Jay’s discovery.

According to The Sun, Spanish police were sufficiently concerned about the possibility of strangulation that Jay’s voice box was sent for additional testing.

The subsequent examination found no evidence of injuries caused by strangulation.

That finding became another piece of evidence supporting the conclusion that Jay’s death resulted from his fall rather than an intentional attack.

HIS PHONE COULD HELP RECONSTRUCT HIS FINAL HOURS

The new documentary also examines Jay’s phone and its final activity.

Digital forensic scientist Dr Angus Marshall works with Debbie to examine the device, which was found close to Jay’s body.

The phone contains records of his final texts and calls, as well as information showing how its battery level declined before eventually dying.

Its last known location could also help investigators understand where Jay was before he disappeared from communication.

Debbie later returns to Tenerife with Dr Shepherd, her brother Glen Duncan and local walking guides to retrace the route Jay may have taken while trying to return to his accommodation.

At one emotional moment, Debbie asks her son:

“What were you thinking, Jay? Why did you not just turn back?”

YEARS OF CONSPIRACY THEORIES

Jay’s disappearance generated enormous attention online.

As the search continued, social-media users proposed theories involving kidnapping, drug gangs and other alleged scenarios.

Debbie has repeatedly criticised what she described as a flood of misinformation surrounding her son.

She previously said that online speculation had caused additional trauma for her family while they were already dealing with Jay’s disappearance and death.

The coroner’s conclusion in 2025 did not stop every theory from circulating online.

For Debbie, returning to the evidence has therefore been about more than simply understanding how Jay died.

It has also been about separating established facts from years of speculation.

A MOTHER FINALLY HAS ONE ANSWER

Jay’s death was officially concluded to be an accident.

But the emotional questions surrounding his final hours have remained with his family.

Now, after examining the medical evidence with Dr Shepherd, Debbie has an answer to one of the questions that haunted her most.

Her son suffered a devastating fall in the mountains.

And according to Dr Shepherd, the injuries were so severe that Jay probably did not experience a prolonged period of suffering afterward.

For a mother who spent years imagining her son alone and badly injured, that knowledge may offer a small measure of peace.

Jay was only 19 years old.

More than two years after his disappearance, his family continues to remember him not as the subject of internet theories, but as a son, brother, friend and young man whose life ended far too soon.

The new documentary Cause of Death will revisit the evidence surrounding Jay’s final hours and his death in Tenerife. It is scheduled to air on Channel 5 at 9 p.m. on September 30, 2026.
