ONE YEAR WITHOUT LITTLE GUS — $1 MILLION REWARD OFFERED AS POLICE BELIEVE SOMEONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED
SOUTH AUSTRALIA — One year after four-year-old Gus Lamont vanished from his family’s remote property in the South Australian outback, his parents are still waiting for answers — and police say they believe someone knows what happened to the little boy.
Gus disappeared from Oak Park Station near Yunta, about 300 kilometres northeast of Adelaide, on September 27, 2025.
Despite one of the largest and most intensive missing-person searches ever conducted by South Australia Police, no trace of him has been found.
Now, as the first anniversary of his disappearance arrives, authorities have offered a reward of up to $1 million for information that leads to the conviction of the person or people responsible for his disappearance and/or the recovery of his remains.
“SOMEONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED TO GUS”
Gus’s parents, Joshua Lamont and Jessica Murray, made an emotional public appeal shortly before the anniversary.
The couple, who had largely stayed out of the public spotlight throughout the investigation, described their son as a “beautiful, sweet and unique little boy.”
His mother said Gus loved music, listening to stories and playing in the natural world.
She said the family had been forced to endure the most devastating and inexplicable experience of their lives.
His father delivered an emotional plea for anyone with information to come forward.
“We believe that someone knows something,” Josh said.
“Someone knows what happened to Gus, and may even know where he is.”
The family said they desperately want Gus to come home and understand what happened to him.
They also said that during the year he has been missing, Gus should have celebrated his fifth birthday and watched his younger brother reach his first birthday.
THE DAY GUS DISAPPEARED
Gus was last seen at around 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
His grandmother reportedly saw him playing outside near a mound of dirt at the family property.
About 30 minutes later, when she went to call him inside, he was gone.
The enormous Oak Park Station covers approximately 60,000 hectares, making the initial search extraordinarily difficult.
Police, emergency workers, defence personnel, Aboriginal trackers and volunteers searched the property using ground teams, dogs, horses, all-terrain vehicles, drones and aircraft.
The search eventually covered an area of approximately 700 square kilometres.
DAMS WERE DRAINED AND MINE SHAFTS SEARCHED
Investigators examined virtually every possible scenario.
Multiple dams and waterways were searched, with some dams drained.
Open mine shafts, wells, bores, buildings, scrub and other areas across the vast property were also examined.
Police conducted 11 separate ground searches over 30 days, while aerial searches used specialised cameras, drones and aircraft.
Authorities also used artificial intelligence to analyse aerial imagery for potential areas of interest.
A May 2026 search covering more than 30 kilometres of waterways and creeks produced no new evidence. Police also examined wells and bores following heavy rain and flooding.
Despite the enormous effort, investigators have still been unable to locate Gus.
POLICE NO LONGER BELIEVE HE SIMPLY WANDERED AWAY
The case was formally declared a major crime in February 2026.
South Australia Police have since said they do not believe Gus simply wandered away from the homestead.
They have also said the evidence does not support the theory that he was abducted by an unknown stranger.
Instead, police have said their investigation is focused on the possibility that a person known to Gus was involved in his disappearance and suspected death.
That remains an investigative theory, not a court finding, and Gus has never been found.
Police have not publicly charged anyone in connection with Gus’s disappearance.
NEW “ANOMALIES” FOUND IN AERIAL IMAGES
There has also been a potentially significant development.
Detectives reviewing extensive aerial imagery of Oak Park Station identified what police described as “anomalies.”
The images are being examined before authorities decide whether another physical search of the property is warranted.
Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said police had conducted a painstaking, methodical review of aerial material gathered during the investigation.
If the review identifies areas requiring further examination, officers could return to the property.
THE $1 MILLION REWARD
On September 23, South Australia Police announced a reward of up to A$1 million.
The reward is available for information leading to the conviction of the person or people responsible for Gus’s disappearance and/or the recovery of his remains.
Police said they hoped the substantial reward could encourage someone with information to finally come forward.
Detective Superintendent Fielke urged anyone who knows something about Gus’s disappearance to contact investigators, regardless of how insignificant they believe the information may be.
HIS FAMILY IS STILL WAITING
For Gus’s parents, the passing of a year has not brought closure.
His mother said Gus had been growing up in an environment she cherished and had a bright future ahead of him.
She also spoke about the heartbreaking reality that Gus and his younger brother will not be able to grow up together as the family had imagined.
His parents’ message remains simple: they want their son home and they want answers.
Meanwhile, people in nearby communities continue to remember the little boy with blond curls whose disappearance has gripped South Australia.
A local resident told ABC that Gus’s disappearance remains on people’s minds and that finding him would mean a great deal to the community.
ONE YEAR LATER, GUS IS STILL MISSING
A year after Gus was last seen playing outside his family home, there is still no confirmed account of what happened to him.
There is no body.
There has been no conviction.
And there has been no final explanation for how a four-year-old could disappear from such a remote property without being found despite an extraordinary search effort.
Police continue to investigate.
For Gus’s family, the hope is that somewhere, someone holds the piece of information that can finally explain what happened to their little boy.
Gus Lamont remains missing.
