NEWBORN BABY MARIA SKOPOVA FOUND DEAD AFTER BIRTH — DISTURBING DETAILS EMERGE IN SHEFFIELD CASE
A heartbreaking case involving a newborn baby girl in Sheffield has shocked the local community, after new details emerged about the final hours of her short life.
The baby, initially known in court as “Baby S,” has now been identified as Maria Skopova. She was born on August 30, 2026, in Sheffield and died on the same day.
Her death is now the subject of a major criminal investigation, with four adults facing murder charges and a teenage girl also facing a separate charge connected to the alleged concealment of what happened.
A NEWBORN BABY WAS FOUND AFTER POLICE WERE CALLED
On the morning of August 30, South Yorkshire Police received a report raising concerns about the safety of a newborn baby in the Wincobank area of Sheffield.
Officers went to a property on Holywell Heights and searched the address.
Maria was found inside an outbuilding at the property. Emergency services attended, but despite efforts by police and paramedics, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.
A subsequent forensic post-mortem examination determined that Maria had died from stab wounds.
At later court proceedings, prosecutors said the newborn had suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stabbing incidents.
The court previously heard that Maria was found wrapped in a towel and inside a bag in an outbuilding at the property.
MARIA WAS ONLY HOURS OLD
Maria was born on the same day she died.
Her identity was initially protected during the early stages of the investigation, with prosecutors and the media referring to her as Baby S.
At an inquest opening on October 1, the baby was formally identified as Maria Skopova.
The coroner, Tanyka Rawden, heard that Maria died on August 30 and that emergency services had been called that day.
Because criminal proceedings are now underway, the inquest has been adjourned until March 25, 2027.
FOUR ADULTS ARE ACCUSED OF MURDER
Four adults have been charged with Maria’s murder:
- Andrea Skopova, 20
- Peter Horvath Jr., 19
- Peter Horvath Sr., 38
- Nina Horvathova, 37
According to prosecutors, the four also face charges of causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice by allegedly taking steps to conceal what happened.
Andrea Skopova is Maria’s mother. Prosecutors told an earlier hearing that the baby’s father was unknown and was not believed to be Peter Horvath Jr., who was described as Skopova’s boyfriend. Horvath Jr. is the son of Peter Horvath Sr. and Nina Horvathova.
A 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL HAS ALSO BEEN CHARGED
A 15-year-old girl, who cannot legally be named because of her age, has also been charged with perverting the course of justice.
She appeared alongside the four adults during court proceedings.
At the October 2 hearing at Sheffield Crown Court, no pleas were entered. All five defendants were remanded in custody.
Two other women, aged 26 and 37, were previously arrested on suspicion of murder but were later released on bail.
POLICE URGE PEOPLE NOT TO SPECULATE
South Yorkshire Police have described the investigation as complex and deeply distressing.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward said investigators were committed to pursuing every line of enquiry while asking the public not to speculate or share unverified information online.
Police initially arrested seven people between the ages of 15 and 38 in connection with the investigation. Five were subsequently charged, while two women remained on bail.
Police have also asked anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact them, quoting incident number 993 of August 30, 2026.
TRIAL SET FOR APRIL 2027
The four adults and the teenage defendant appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on October 2, 2026.
The defendants did not enter pleas during that hearing and were remanded in custody.
A further hearing has been scheduled for December 14, 2026, while the murder trial is due to begin on April 12, 2027.
The trial is expected to last approximately six to seven weeks.
The inquest into Maria’s death has meanwhile been adjourned until March 25, 2027, allowing the criminal proceedings to take their course.
A SHORT LIFE THAT HAS LEFT A COMMUNITY HEARTBROKEN
Maria Skopova lived for only a matter of hours, but her death has already had a profound impact on the Sheffield community and the emergency workers who attended the scene.
Flowers were left near the police cordon at Holywell Heights as investigators continued their work.
For now, many questions surrounding Maria’s final hours remain for the courts to examine.
The criminal case will determine what happened and who, if anyone, is legally responsible.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
