REUBEN OWEN AND JESSICA ELLWOOD — A LOVE STORY BUILT AROUND FARM LIFE

REUBEN OWEN AND JESSICA ELLWOOD — A LOVE STORY BUILT AROUND FARM LIFE

For Reuben Owen and Jessica Ellwood, romance does not always mean candlelit dinners or weekends away.

Sometimes, it means muddy boots, sheep, tractors, machinery, early mornings and long days working side by side.

The couple have built a relationship around a shared understanding of rural life — and what makes their story particularly special is that farming is not simply a job for either of them. It is the world they grew up in.

From meeting through the Young Farmers community to eventually sharing a home and working together, Reuben and Jess have gradually turned a young romance into a partnership rooted in the countryside.

Reuben and Jessica first met at a Young Farmers’ event in 2024, bringing together two young people who already understood the demands of agricultural life.

Their backgrounds made it easier for them to understand one another.

Jessica grew up at Brough Castle Farm in Cumbria, where she became involved in farming from an early age. By the time she was a teenager, she was already working alongside her parents and taking on increasing responsibility at the family farm.

In a 2023 interview with Farmers Guardian, Jessica explained that farming had always been part of her life. She described growing up around cows and sheep and said she wanted to encourage more young women to consider careers in agriculture.

Reuben, meanwhile, grew up at the famous Ravenseat Farm in the Yorkshire Dales and became known to millions of viewers through Our Yorkshire Farm.

Their shared background meant that neither needed to explain why a normal day could involve getting up early, working with animals or spending hours repairing machinery.

They simply understood it.

As their relationship developed, Reuben became increasingly open about how much Jessica meant to him.

He has described meeting her as “the biggest stroke of luck” and has spoken warmly about how well she fits into his busy farming life.

In another affectionate post, Reuben praised Jess for being able to handle almost anything they encountered — from boats and cows to plant machinery and sheep.

He wrote that she could “handle it” and keep the job going, adding that he loved her “to pieces.”

It was a glimpse into a relationship that does not revolve around separating work and personal life.

For Reuben and Jess, the two often exist side by side.

JESSICA IS A FARMER IN HER OWN RIGHT

While much of the public attention naturally falls on Reuben because of his television career, Jessica has her own strong connection to agriculture.

She works at her family’s Brough Castle Farm in Cumbria and has spoken about her passion for livestock and the future of farming.

She has described cows and sheep as having individual personalities and said she considers the animals she has grown up with part of the family.

Jessica has also been involved in efforts to improve soil health and biodiversity on the farm, including work involving hedgerows and woodland habitats.

Her ambition has been to demonstrate that farming can offer meaningful careers for young women — something she sees as particularly important for the future of the industry.

That shared passion has become one of the foundations of her relationship with Reuben.

THEIR DATES CAN INVOLVE DIGGERS AND SHEEP

For most couples, spending a day together might mean going shopping, watching a movie or taking a weekend trip.

For Reuben and Jess, it can mean something very different.

In 2025, Reuben revealed that the couple had spent time felling trees and working with machinery together.

He even joked that Jess was better at driving a digger than he was at milking cows.

Their relationship has repeatedly been shown through moments involving farming rather than traditional celebrity romance.

The couple have appeared together around cows, sheep and machinery, demonstrating how naturally their personal lives overlap with their work.

 A LITTLE LAMB CALLED FLUFF

One of the sweetest parts of their story came during lambing season.

While helping Jess on her family’s farm, Reuben became involved in caring for a newborn lamb that needed extra attention.

That experience eventually led to Fluff, a young lamb who became particularly special to the couple.

Fluff suffered a broken leg shortly after being born after her mother accidentally stepped on her.

Jess and Reuben decided to take the lamb into their care.

Fluff even spent time inside the house, sleeping on a blanket, and quickly became much more than just another animal on the farm.

Reuben joked that Fluff was their first pet and described the way they cared for her as being almost like caring for a child.

For a couple whose lives already revolve around animals, Fluff became another little part of their shared world. FROM VISITING JESS TO MOVING IN

Their relationship eventually reached another important milestone.

Reuben began spending so much time at Jessica’s family farm in Brough Castle, Cumbria, that staying over gradually became something much more permanent.

He explained that he initially travelled down to see Jess at night but increasingly found himself wanting to stay another night — and then another.

What reportedly started with little more than a toothbrush eventually turned into a full move.

Reuben joked that his clothes were ending up in the washing machine and dinner was waiting for him at home.

Eventually, he was simply living there with Jess and her family.

He described the arrangement as “brilliant” and said they were enjoying their time together.

For Jess, the move was hardly a dramatic change because Reuben had already been spending so much time there.

She said it simply made sense for them to live together and described the experience as “really special.”

THEIR VERSION OF DATE NIGHT

Even with their demanding schedules, the couple still make time for each other outside the farm.

Jess has said they occasionally go out for a meal and have travelled together, including a holiday to Cyprus.

But their favourite evenings can be much simpler.

After long days working, they might simply settle down together with fish and chips or a Chinese takeaway.

There is something fitting about that.

Their relationship does not appear to depend on elaborate plans.

Sometimes, the best part of their day is simply being together after everything else is finished.

THEIR LOVE STORY BECOMES PART OF LIFE IN THE DALES

Reuben’s relationship with Jess has also become part of his television story.

After becoming famous through Our Yorkshire Farm, Reuben began forging his own path with Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales, a Channel 5 series following his life, farming work and growing machinery business.

His career has continued to develop alongside his relationship.

Reuben has built a business around groundwork and plant machinery while maintaining his connection to farming.

In 2024, he told Farmers Guardian that he wanted to continue farming and eventually hoped to have a farm of his own. He also said that spending time away from the farm had made him appreciate it even more.

Jessica understands that ambition because farming is part of her own future too.

 WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

Naturally, fans have wondered whether the couple could eventually take their relationship even further.

But for now, there is no need for them to rush.

They are already sharing a home, working around animals and machinery, travelling together and building their careers.

They are also learning what it means to combine two farming families and two busy working lives.

Their story is therefore less about grand romantic gestures and more about the everyday moments that gradually build a life together.

A meal after a long shift.

A lamb needing extra care.

A tractor or digger waiting to be operated.

A holiday away from the farm.

And then returning home to the same person who understands exactly why you love the life you have chosen.

TWO PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER’S WORLD

Reuben Owen and Jessica Ellwood come from different farms, different parts of northern England and different family circumstances.

But they share something that can be difficult to find: a genuine understanding of each other’s world.

Jessica knows what it means to spend long days caring for animals.

Reuben knows what it means to balance farming with machinery, business and the pressures of being recognised in public.

Together, they appear to have found a rhythm that works for them.

Their romance may have started at a Young Farmers’ event, but it has grown far beyond a first meeting.

Now, their lives are intertwined through family, farming, animals, work and a shared love of the countryside.

And perhaps that is what makes their story so appealing.

For Reuben and Jess, love does not need to take them away from the farm.

It seems they have found a way to build their love right in the middle of it.
