NEWBORN BABY MARIA SKOPOVA DIED ON THE DAY SHE WAS BORN — FOUR ADULTS NOW FACE MURDER CHARGES

NEWBORN BABY MARIA SKOPOVA DIED ON THE DAY SHE WAS BORN — FOUR ADULTS NOW FACE MURDER CHARGES
A newborn baby girl who was initially known only as “Baby S” has now been formally identified as Maria Skopova, as four adults accused in connection with her death appeared in court.
Maria died on August 30, 2026, the same day she was born, at a property in the Wincobank area of Sheffield, England.
Her death has shocked the local community, while the criminal investigation has now moved into a major court process.
MARIA WAS FOUND AT A SHEFFIELD PROPERTY
Police were called to a property on Holywell Heights on the morning of August 30 following concerns about the safety of a newborn baby.
Officers searched the property and discovered Maria.
Emergency services attended, but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A forensic post-mortem later established that her death was caused by stab wounds.
The court has since heard that Maria was found in an outbuilding at the property.
FOUR ADULTS ARE ACCUSED
Four people have been charged with murder:
- Andrea Skopova, 20
- Peter Horvath Jnr, 19
- Peter Horvath Snr, 38
- Nina Horvathova, 37
They are also charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice.
A 15-year-old girl has separately been charged with perverting the course of justice and cannot be identified because of her age.
All four adults appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on October 2.
No pleas were entered at that hearing.
COURT HEARS DISTURBING DETAILS
Previous court proceedings heard that Maria suffered 33 injuries, including 15 separate stabbing injuries.
The court was also told that her body had been wrapped and placed inside an outhouse at the property.
Because criminal proceedings are active, the allegations made in court have not been established as facts against the defendants.
The Crown Prosecution Service has specifically reminded the public that all defendants have the right to a fair trial and warned against online commentary that could prejudice the proceedings.
HOW THE INVESTIGATION BEGAN
The investigation began after Maria’s mother, Andrea Skopova, attended hospital showing signs that she had recently given birth.
According to evidence reported from an earlier hearing, she did not initially tell medical staff where the baby was.
Police were subsequently contacted and went to the Sheffield property.
Officers then discovered the newborn.
South Yorkshire Police said seven people aged between 15 and 38 were initially arrested on suspicion of murder. Two women, aged 26 and 37, were later released on bail while enquiries continued.
MARIA’S NAME HAS NOW BEEN RELEASED
For weeks, the newborn had been referred to publicly as Baby S while investigators worked to establish her identity.
An inquest opened in Sheffield in October and confirmed the baby’s name as Maria Skopova.
The coroner adjourned the inquest until March 25, 2027, because criminal proceedings are still underway.
The decision means that important questions surrounding Maria’s death will remain under investigation while the criminal case proceeds.
TRIAL EXPECTED NEXT YEAR
The four adult defendants remain in custody.
Their next hearing is scheduled for December 14, 2026, while a trial is expected to begin on April 12, 2027.
The trial is expected to last approximately six to seven weeks.
The 15-year-old defendant is being dealt with separately because of her age.
A COMMUNITY LEFT SHAKEN
South Yorkshire Police described Maria’s death as deeply distressing and said officers involved in the investigation had been profoundly affected.
Tributes have also been left near the property where Maria was discovered.
For the community, the case has been especially painful because Maria’s life lasted only a matter of hours.
She had only just entered the world when her life came to a tragic end.
Now, as the legal process continues, the focus will turn to establishing exactly what happened inside the Sheffield property on the day Maria was born.
A BABY WHO NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO GROW UP
Maria Skopova was born on August 30.
She never had the chance to take her first steps, say her first words, celebrate a birthday or grow up surrounded by the people who might have loved her.
Her name is now at the centre of a major criminal investigation and court case.
But behind the charges and courtroom proceedings is the story of a newborn whose life ended on the very day it began.
The four adults accused of murder have not entered pleas, and the allegations against them remain matters for the court to determine.
For now, Maria’s name has been formally recorded — and the search for answers continues.
Maria Skopova was here for only one day. Her story is now waiting for the truth to be heard in court.
