“YOU HAD A ZEST FOR LIFE” — ZARA SHAW, 16, REMEMBERED AS A “BEAUTIFUL GIRL” WITH AN INFECTIOUS SMILE AFTER RIVER WEAR TR@GEDY

“YOU HAD A ZEST FOR LIFE” — ZARA SHAW, 16, REMEMBERED AS A “BEAUTIFUL GIRL” WITH AN INFECTIOUS SMILE AFTER RIVER WEAR TRAGEDY
Her family say she made them proud from the very beginning — as friends, teachers and a community struggle to come to terms with the loss of a teenager who had so much life ahead of her.
For Zara Shaw, life was supposed to be just beginning.
She was only 16, a student with friends, family and a future still waiting to unfold. Those who knew her remembered her warmth, kindness and unmistakable smile.
But on September 29, Zara’s life was tragically cut short when the car she was travelling in plunged into the River Wear in Sunderland.
Now, as tributes continue to appear along the riverside, Zara’s family have shared deeply personal words about the daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, girlfriend and best friend they say brought so much joy into their lives.
Their message paints a picture of a teenager who loved life — and whose absence has left a space that cannot be filled.
A TRAGEDY ON THE RIVER WEAR
Shortly before 1:30pm on Tuesday, September 29, emergency services were called after reports that a black Audi A3 had come off the road at Panns Bank, near Wearmouth Bridge, and entered the River Wear.
Inside the vehicle were three teenagers who would not make it home.
Zara Shaw, 16, from Newbottle, was travelling with Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge, 16.
All three died in the tragedy.
Another 17-year-old boy who was also in the car managed to reach safety and suffered non-serious injuries. He was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and subsequently released on bail pending further enquiries.
Police have stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and that officers are still working to establish exactly what happened and who was driving when the vehicle entered the river.
No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.
Northumbria Police have also urged people not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident, particularly on social media.
“YOU HAD A ZEST FOR LIFE”
For Zara’s parents, the investigation is only one part of an unimaginable loss.
Their daughter is now being remembered not for the circumstances of her death, but for the person she was.
In a tribute released through Northumbria Police, Zara’s family described her as their “beautiful girl” and said she had a “zest for life.”
They wrote that Zara had “come into this world with a fight” and that they knew she had left it “doing the same.”
The family also spoke about Zara’s close relationship with her sister, Olivia.
They described her as a beloved daughter and sister who had made them proud from the very beginning, while also building friendships and learning new skills throughout her young life.
A GIRL WHO LOVED TO DANCE
Among the memories her family chose to share were Zara’s dance videos, her laughter and, above all, her smile.
They remembered her as someone whose “infectious laugh and smile” had become part of the lives of those around her.
The tribute listed the many roles Zara held within her family and circle of friends — daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, girlfriend and best friend.
It was a reminder that behind the name appearing in news reports was a teenager surrounded by people who knew her personally and loved her deeply.
“To everyone who has been in Zara’s life,” her family said, “we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
They said the people who knew Zara had helped shape the person she became.
HER SCHOOL REMEMBERS A KIND AND LOYAL STUDENT
Zara’s connection to her local community stretched back many years.
Her former school, Christ’s College in Sunderland, said she had attended from the age of four until leaving in the summer.
The school described Zara as a “kind and loyal student” who had a close-knit group of friends.
Staff said she had maintained strong and positive relationships with both her classmates and teachers, worked hard and was a delight to teach.
The school community also extended its condolences to the families and friends of all three teenagers who died.
Zara had also previously attended The Drama Lab in Sunderland, another part of her younger years that has now become part of the memories being shared about her.
“FRIENDLINESS, WARMTH, KINDNESS AND A BEAUTIFUL SMILE”
Zara was also a student at Sunderland College’s Bede Campus.
The college said the deaths of Zara, Luke and Jackson had devastated its community.
In remembering Zara, the college highlighted her friendliness, warmth, kindness and beautiful smile.
She was also remembered as someone who was willing to support other students — another detail that has helped paint a picture of the teenager beyond the tragedy itself.
For classmates and teachers, the loss is especially painful because of how young she was.
At 16, Zara had spent most of her life ahead of her.
There were friendships still to make, places still to visit, experiences still to have and countless ordinary moments that her family had every reason to believe they would share with her.
Instead, they are now left with memories.
FLOWERS AND MESSAGES BY THE RIVER
In the days following the tragedy, friends and members of the community gathered near the River Wear to leave flowers, cards and messages.
Among the tributes were messages from fellow students at Sunderland College.
A white heart-shaped balloon was filled with messages for Zara, including words saying she would be missed and remembered.
Other cards were attached to railings near the scene as young people struggled to express their disbelief at what had happened.
The riverside, once simply part of the city landscape, became a place of mourning.
For those who knew Zara, Luke or Jackson, it is now connected forever with the day their lives changed.
A FAMILY’S THANKS
Zara’s family also took time in their tribute to thank the police officers and emergency services who responded to the tragedy.
They specifically thanked their police liaison officers for treating Zara not simply as a victim in an investigation, but as a child who deserved care and dignity.
They also acknowledged that the incident would have affected the emergency responders themselves.
Their message ended with words that captured the depth of their loss:
“Forever in our thoughts, Zara. Always Mam, Dad & Olivia.”
The family have asked for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.
THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
While Zara’s family and friends mourn, Northumbria Police continue to investigate what led to the Audi entering the River Wear.
A 17-year-old boy who survived the incident has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Police are still working to establish who was driving the vehicle at the time.
Investigators have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or may have CCTV, dashcam or other footage to come forward.
Police have also repeated their request that members of the public avoid speculation while the investigation continues, warning that unconfirmed claims can have a serious impact on grieving families.
MORE THAN A NAME IN A HEADLINE
The River Wear tragedy has left three families grieving three teenagers who should have had decades ahead of them.
For Zara’s family, however, she will never simply be remembered as one of three teenagers who died in a river tragedy.
She was their daughter.
She was Olivia’s sister.
She was a granddaughter, niece, cousin, girlfriend and best friend.
She was the girl who loved making dance videos.
The girl whose laugh and smile were described as infectious.
The student remembered by her school for her kindness and loyalty.
And the “beautiful girl” whose family said she had a zest for life.
The circumstances surrounding the tragedy may remain the subject of a police investigation.
But to the people who loved Zara, her story is much bigger than what happened on September 29.
It is the story of a 16-year-old girl whose life was filled with people who loved her — and whose memory will now live on through them.
💔 “A tragedy has taken you, but our memories remain blessed with having you as our daughter.”
Rest in peace, Zara Shaw.
