SHE WAS ONLY 16 — THE HEARTBREAKING FAMILY TRIBUTE TO ZARA SHAW

Her family remembered an infectious smile, a love of life and the precious memories that will stay with them forever.

Zara Shaw was just 16 years old, with so much of life still ahead of her. Now, her family is facing an unimaginable loss after the teenager died alongside two other young people when a car entered the River Wear in Sunderland, England.

Zara, from Newbottle, died on Tuesday, September 29, alongside 16-year-old Luke Etheridge and 17-year-old Jackson Duke. The black Audi A3 they were travelling in came off the road at Panns Bank, near Wearmouth Bridge, shortly before 1:30 p.m. and entered the river, according to Northumbria Police.

As the community mourns the three teenagers, Zara’s family has shared a deeply personal tribute that offers a glimpse of the lively girl they loved so much.

In their statement, Zara’s family described her as a beloved daughter and sister whose laughter, smile and enthusiasm for life left a lasting impression on those around her.

“Zara, you came into this world with a fight, and we know you left it doing the same,” they wrote.

“You had a zest for life and life loved you.”

Their words painted a picture of a teenager surrounded by family, friendships and the small, everyday moments that become priceless memories after a loss.

The family recalled Zara’s dance videos, her infectious laugh and her smile. They also spoke about the many roles she held in the lives of those who loved her — daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, girlfriend and best friend.

“You made us proud from day one,” they said, remembering how she studied, learned new skills and made lifelong friends.

Among the most personal parts of the tribute was the family’s message about Zara’s sister, Olivia.

Zara had been “created as a companion” for her sister, the family wrote, adding that Olivia loved her “deeply and unconditionally.”

The words captured a bond that the family will carry with them even as they face a future without Zara physically by their side.

For her parents, relatives and friends, the loss is not simply a name in a news report. It is the absence of a young woman whose presence was woven into family life — someone whose laughter, personality and everyday moments helped make their world what it was.

“OUR MEMORIES REMAIN BLESSED”

The family also expressed gratitude to everyone who has reached out with kindness and support during what they described as the worst time of their lives.

“We are humbled and grateful,” they said.

“A tragedy has taken you but our memories remain blessed with having you as our daughter.”

They ended their tribute with a final message to Zara:

“Rest safe our beautiful girl, Zara.”

The family also thanked Northumbria Police liaison officers and emergency service personnel for the care shown to their daughter. They said they were grateful that Zara had been treated with compassion and had not been left alone.

Their statement was both a farewell to their daughter and a heartfelt acknowledgment of the people who supported them during an extraordinarily painful time.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE RIVER WEAR?

Police received reports shortly before 1:30 p.m. on September 29 that a black Audi A3 had left the road at Panns Bank and entered the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.

Zara Shaw, Luke Etheridge and Jackson Duke were all in the vehicle and later died.

A fourth teenager, a 17-year-old boy, reached safety and sustained injuries that police described as non-serious. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released on bail pending further inquiries.

Investigators have been working to establish the circumstances that led to the vehicle entering the water, including who was driving at the time. Police said they did not believe another vehicle was involved.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have urged the public not to speculate about the circumstances on social media.

A LIFE THAT WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN

At just 16, Zara’s life ended far too soon. But her family’s tribute makes clear that the memories she leaves behind extend far beyond the circumstances of her death.

They remember her smile, her laughter, her dance videos and the friendships she made. They remember a daughter who made them proud and a sister who was deeply loved.

For those who knew Zara, those memories will remain part of her story — a reminder of the person she was, not simply the tragedy that took her away.

“Forever in our thoughts, Zara,” her family wrote.

“Always Mam, Dad & Olivia.”

Zara Shaw was 16. She was loved by her family, cherished by her sister and remembered by those whose lives she touched.
