GIRL, 4, DIED AFTER BEING BEATEN AND DUNKED INTO FREEZING POND — NOW HER NEIGHBOUR HAS PLEADED GUILTY

Jessica Joy Mast was just four years old when she died in Missouri in December 2020. Nearly six years later, a woman involved in the case has admitted her role in the little girl’s death, bringing renewed attention to a deeply disturbing case.

A four-year-old girl’s tragic story has returned to the headlines after a Missouri woman pleaded guilty to charges connected to the child’s death.

Jessica Joy Mast died in December 2020 after enduring severe mistreatment, including beatings and repeated submersion in a freezing farm pond, according to court records and reporting on the case.

Kourtney Taylor Aumen, 27, recently pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with the incident. She had been due to stand trial before reaching the plea agreement and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 21, 2026.

The case unfolded in Benton County, Missouri, in December 2020.

According to investigators, Jessica and her two-year-old brother were subjected to serious mistreatment. Prosecutors said Aumen and another neighbour, Ethan Mast, had become convinced that Jessica’s family was possessed by demons.

That disturbing belief reportedly became the basis for their attempts to discipline the children.

Authorities said Jessica was beaten and repeatedly plunged into a nearby pond while temperatures were around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, approximately 4 degrees Celsius.

Her parents, James and Mary Mast, were reportedly threatened when they tried to intervene or were expected to watch what was happening.

The allegations described a frightening situation in which the young children were placed in serious danger by adults around them.

The case came to light when a Benton County sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of a possible domestic disturbance at the family’s home.

Inside, the deputy was directed upstairs, where Jessica was found lying on the floor beside a set of bunk beds, wrapped in a pink blanket.

Authorities reported that the little girl had extensive injuries. Investigators also noted that her hair was still wet, consistent with the account that she had been taken into the pond.

Jessica was already dead when officers arrived.

The discovery led to an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death and the roles played by the adults who had been present. <Cite refs={[“turn135602news0″,”turn135602search1”]}/>

THE LATEST COURT DEVELOPMENT

Aumen initially faced more serious charges, including first-degree murder, along with other offences connected to the incident.

She has now admitted guilt to second-degree murder and first-degree assault under a plea agreement. Her sentencing is scheduled for December 21, 2026.

Ethan Mast, who is not related to Jessica’s family, has also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the little girl’s death.

The case has also involved proceedings against Jessica’s parents.

Her father, James Mast, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault in 2024 but subsequently sought to withdraw his plea. Reporting indicates that his efforts to challenge it have continued.

Her mother, Mary Mast, pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child in 2023 and has faced further court proceedings.

The legal cases involving the adults are separate, and their individual outcomes should not be confused with Aumen’s recent guilty plea.

A TRAGEDY THAT CONTINUES TO RAISE QUESTIONS

Jessica was only four years old. She depended on the adults around her for protection, care and safety.

Instead, the circumstances described by investigators revealed a deeply troubling failure to protect a vulnerable child from serious harm.

The case has also drawn attention to the dangers of allowing extreme beliefs to justify cruelty or mistreatment, particularly when children are involved.

For those following the proceedings, Aumen’s guilty plea represents an important development in a case that began nearly six years ago. Her sentence, however, is still to be determined.

Jessica’s story remains a heartbreaking reminder that children rely on adults to keep them safe — and that when those responsible for their care place them in danger, the consequences can be devastating.

Jessica Joy Mast was just four years old. As the legal process continues, her name remains at the centre of a case that has left a community confronting the tragic loss of a young life.
