SECOND MAN ARRESTED AFTER PREGNANT MOTHER, 35, IS FOUND DEAD IN BURNING VAN — FAMILY PLEADS FOR RESPECT AS INVESTIGATION DEEPENS

Samantha “Sammi” Phythian was remembered as a much-loved mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Now, a second arrest has brought renewed attention to the heartbreaking case in North Wales.

PRESTATYN, WALES — A devastating investigation into the death of a pregnant woman whose body was discovered inside a burning van has taken a new turn, with police arresting a second man in connection with the case.

Samantha Natalie Phythian, 35, known affectionately as Sammi to her loved ones, was found inside the vehicle after emergency services responded to reports of a fire on Gas Works Lane in Prestatyn, North Wales, at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

Authorities later confirmed that a post-mortem examination revealed Samantha was pregnant at the time of her death. The case has since developed into a murder investigation, leaving her family and the local community struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

On October 10, police confirmed that a 47-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and possession with intent to supply drugs.

The arrest follows the earlier charging of Thomas Matthew Hammond Bell, 38, in connection with Samantha’s death. Bell appeared at Mold Crown Court on October 9, where his legal team indicated that he would deny the murder charge when he formally enters his plea.

The court heard that Samantha was known to Bell. Judge Geraint Walters also said it was understood that she may have been alive when the van caught fire. Bell’s position, as reported in court, was that he did not start the fire.

The allegations have not been established at trial, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Zoie Dunkerley said investigators were moving quickly and exploring every available line of inquiry. Police have also appealed to the public for information that could help establish what happened.

As investigators work to piece together the circumstances of Samantha’s death, her family has shared a deeply personal tribute to the woman they loved.

They described her as a “much-loved mum, daughter, sister, auntie and friend,” emphasizing the special place she held in the lives of those who knew her.

“Her tragic and untimely death has left her family and friends devastated, struggling to come to terms with the loss of someone who meant so much to so many,” the family said.

They added that the memories Samantha created, the love she gave and the lives she touched would never be forgotten.

For those closest to her, Samantha was far more than a name in a police investigation. She was a loved one whose absence has left an immeasurable void.

The family also made a heartfelt request for people to be mindful of rumors circulating on social media and to respect their privacy as they grieve.

A COMMUNITY LEFT IN SHOCK

The discovery has deeply affected the seaside town of Prestatyn, where local councillor Gerry Frobisher said the community was shocked by what had happened.

Police continue to appeal for anyone with relevant information to come forward. Members of the public can contact North Wales Police through its online webchat or by calling 101, quoting reference number 26000816112.

Bell is due to appear in court again on November 27, 2026. A provisional trial date has been set for April 2027.

As the investigation continues, Samantha’s family is left facing a loss that words cannot repair.

Behind every headline is a family, a life and a future that mattered. For Sammi’s loved ones, the hope now is that the investigation will establish the facts while the memories of the woman they cherished remain stronger than the tragedy that took her from them.
