A FATHER’S UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT: THE STORY OF DEREK AND JIM REDMOND

At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond entered the 400-meter semifinal with immense potential, having already won his opening heat and quarterfinal. A year earlier, he had helped Great Britain claim the world championship title in the 4×400 meters relay. Having been forced to withdraw from the 1988 Seoul Games due to an Achilles injury, Derek understood how quickly an Olympic opportunity could vanish.

Halfway through the semifinal race, Derek’s right hamstring tore unexpectedly. He collapsed to the ground as his competitors continued down the track. Refusing to give up, Derek stood up and began hobbling toward the finish line in sheer pain.

Watching from the stands, his father, Jim Redmond, reacted instinctively. Fearing his son might injure himself further, Jim rushed past stadium officials and ran onto the track. When he reached Derek and wrapped an arm around him, the athlete broke down in tears.

Jim initially urged Derek to stop, but when Derek insisted on finishing the race, his father offered his shoulder. Together, father and son walked the remaining distance as the entire stadium rose to applaud their perseverance and love.

Though Derek was officially disqualified and the injury ended his professional sprinting career, his athletic journey continued. He later played basketball in the British league and tried out for England’s rugby sevens team. Twenty years later, Jim was honored by carrying the Olympic torch for London 2012 before passing away in October 2022 at age 81. Their moment remains an enduring symbol of devotion.
