“EIGHT DAYS APART”: THE HEARTBREAKING CASE OF SIX-YEAR-OLD TWINS MANUELA AND ANTONIA
A father’s world was shattered when his six-year-old twin daughters died just eight days apart. Now, a new psychiatric report has brought fresh developments in the case against their mother in Brazil.
The deaths of Manuela and Antonia Pereira have left a family searching for answers after both little girls were found unresponsive at their home in Igrejinha, southern Brazil, in October 2024.
Their mother, 44-year-old Gisele Beatriz Dias, is accused of causing their deaths. Prosecutors allege that both girls were suffocated, but the case has not yet been decided in court. Dias has denied killing her daughters, and her defence intends to argue her innocence before a jury.
A FATHER’S UNIMAGINABLE LOSS
Manuela was found unconscious on October 7, 2024, and was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Eight days later, on October 15, her twin sister Antonia was also found unresponsive in her bed.
Their father, Michel Persival Pereira, later described the devastating moments when he returned home and discovered that each of his daughters was gone.
His account reflects the shock and helplessness experienced by a parent confronted with a loss no family should have to endure.
Initially, investigators considered poisoning as a possible explanation. However, forensic testing reportedly examined more than 100 substances without finding toxins that explained the deaths. Autopsies did not establish a definitive cause, while prosecutors maintain their allegation of suffocation.
A NEW DEVELOPMENT IN THE CASE
Suspicion reportedly intensified after a doctor who had treated Dias for severe depression told investigators that she had spoken about disturbing ideas concerning her children.
The psychiatric assessment, recently completed as part of the legal proceedings, concluded that there was no evidence of a mental disorder that would have prevented Dias from understanding the criminal nature of the alleged acts at the time.
That finding concerns her ability to be held criminally responsible; it does not establish that she committed the alleged acts.
The assessment had been a key issue delaying the proceedings. With the report completed, the case can move toward the next stages before a jury, although a trial date has not been set in the latest reports.
“THE TWO MOST CHALLENGING YEARS OF OUR LIVES”
The twins’ aunt, Graziela Pereira, said the assessment brought the family a measure of relief after two deeply difficult years. The family is now looking toward the judicial process for answers.
For those who loved Manuela and Antonia, the pain of losing two children from the same family in such a short period remains profound.
As the legal case moves forward, the central questions surrounding the girls’ deaths will have to be examined in court. Dias continues to deny the allegations, and the jury will ultimately consider the evidence presented.
