“THEY TRIED TO SAVE THEM, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE” — TWO YOUNG SIBLINGS DIE IN DEVASTATING RV FIRE AS THEIR PARENTS FACE MURDER CHARGES
Mavryck “Mavy” Len, 4, and his little sister, Skylar Jayne Chambers, 3, died after a fire engulfed their family’s recreational vehicle in Texas. Now, their parents are facing serious criminal charges as investigators continue to examine what happened that terrible morning.
A devastating tragedy has left a family grieving the loss of two young children after a fire tore through a recreational vehicle in Texas. Months later, the children’s parents have been arrested and charged in connection with their deaths.
Mavryck “Mavy” Len, 4, and his younger sister, Skylar Jayne Chambers, 3, were inside an RV on a property along County Road 3819 near Cleveland, Texas, when the fire broke out on the morning of August 11, 2026.
According to the Liberty County Fire Marshal’s Office, emergency crews responded to a 911 call reporting that the recreational vehicle was engulfed in flames, with people believed to be trapped inside.
When firefighters arrived, the trailer was already collapsing. Despite the dangerous conditions, firefighters entered the burning structure in an attempt to reach those inside.
Cleveland Fire Chief Sean Anderson described how crews pushed forward despite the fire, but the two children were found deceased near the front of the RV.
They were pronounced dead at the scene.
TWO LITTLE LIVES, ONE UNIMAGINABLE LOSS
Mavy and Skylar were remembered in their obituary as siblings who shared a particularly close bond.
Their family described them as inseparable, connected by a closeness that was unmistakable throughout their young lives.
At just 4 and 3 years old, they had barely begun to explore the world. Their deaths have left loved ones facing a loss that no family should have to endure.
A chaplain was called to provide support to the grieving family and the firefighters who responded to the scene.
THEIR PARENTS NOW FACE MURDER CHARGES
Following an investigation that included examining the scene and conducting interviews, authorities arrested the children’s parents: Meaghan Michelle Herrod, 30, and Matthew Allen Chambers, 39.
Both have been charged with two counts of felony murder in connection with the children’s deaths, according to PEOPLE and the Liberty County Fire Marshal’s Office.
The pair are being held at the Liberty County Jail, with total bond set at $1 million for each defendant.
However, significant questions remain unanswered. Investigators are still working to establish how the fire began and where the parents were when it broke out.
The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
GRANDMOTHER RECALLS THE DESPERATE RACE BACK
The children’s grandmother, who asked not to be identified, told KHOU 11 that the parents had reportedly walked from their trailer to her home shortly before the fire erupted.
According to her account, a neighbour began shouting that the RV was on fire and someone needed to call 911.
The family rushed back toward the trailer, but the flames had already taken hold.
The grandmother recalled that her daughter managed to open the door, only to discover that the RV was engulfed.
By then, it was too late to save the children.
Her account provides a glimpse of the panic and desperation that unfolded as family members realised what was happening.
INVESTIGATORS STILL SEARCH FOR ANSWERS
The Liberty County Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and the Liberty County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities have not publicly established the precise cause of the fire, and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths.
The fact that the parents have been charged does not, by itself, establish exactly how the fire started or what happened immediately before it.
Those questions will need to be addressed through the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.
A FAMILY LEFT TO GRIEVE
For those who loved Mavy and Skylar, the legal case cannot undo the loss of two children whose lives ended far too soon.
Their names are now at the centre of a heartbreaking investigation, but their family’s memories extend beyond the tragedy that brought them into the headlines.
Two siblings who were described as inseparable are gone, leaving loved ones to mourn the childhoods and futures they will never get to see.
As investigators work to establish what happened, the family is left with the painful task of remembering two little lives taken in a devastating fire.
Mavryck and Skylar were only 4 and 3 years old. May their memories live on in the hearts of everyone who loved them.
