William died on October 10 after entering the tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

The opening hearing at Doncaster Coroner’s Court was told that he climbed over two fences before entering the enclosure at around 1:30 p.m. He was approached by the tiger, and the ensuing physical encounter caused multiple traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An initial post-mortem examination recorded multiple traumatic injuries as the cause of death.

The hearing also established that William had been under the care of adult mental health services in Doncaster. Despite his diagnosis and previous episodes of psychosis, he was described in the hearing as highly functioning and independent, with no care requirements.

In a statement released after his death, William’s family described him as “a bright, warm and engaging young man” who was deeply loved by his family and loved them in return.

They said he had experienced significant mental illness over a number of years and had been prescribed strong medication.

The family stressed that it would be for the coroner to determine what role, if any, his illness or treatment played in the circumstances surrounding his death. Their concerns about his contact with mental health services are now part of the wider questions being examined by the relevant authorities.

The family is also asking people to stop sharing distressing footage and offensive online content relating to the incident. They said its circulation has caused them further suffering at an already devastating time.

Investigations are continuing

The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has launched an independent patient safety investigation following William’s death.

Separately, City of Doncaster Council is conducting a health and safety investigation into the incident at the wildlife park. The findings are expected to be shared with the coroner as the case progresses.

The inquest opening did not establish whether any failures occurred in William’s care, and no conclusions should be drawn before the investigations are completed.

A full inquest is scheduled for March 18, 2027, when further evidence is expected to be considered. >

Remembering William beyond the tragedy

Amid the questions and investigations, William’s family wants him to be remembered as much more than the circumstances of his death.

Their tribute described a young man who brought warmth to the people around him and was cherished by those who knew him.

For his loved ones, the coming months will bring more waiting as investigators work to establish the full circumstances of what happened. Their hope, they have said, is that the relevant authorities will do everything possible to understand why the tragedy occurred.

William’s family is grieving a deeply loved son. As the inquest continues, they deserve privacy, compassion and the opportunity for the facts to emerge through a careful investigation.
