HERO BOY, 12, SAVED HIS MUM’S LIFE AFTER SHE PASSED OUT AT 60MPH — NOW, HE’S BEING HONOURED FOR HIS INCREDIBLE COURAGE
Zac was on his way to a Christmas market with his mum, Nicola, when a terrifying medical emergency left him facing a split-second decision. With the car accelerating out of control, the young boy took action that may have saved both their lives.
A routine family journey turned into a life-threatening emergency when 12-year-old Zac’s mum suddenly lost consciousness behind the wheel of their car on the A40.
Nicola had been driving her son to a Christmas market when she began feeling unwell. As her condition deteriorated, she managed to steer part of the vehicle off the road before passing out completely.
But the danger was far from over.
Their automatic car remained in drive, with Nicola’s foot jammed on the accelerator. The vehicle began speeding up again, veering back onto the dual carriageway while Zac sat helplessly in the passenger seat.
In those terrifying moments, the young boy realised that his mum was unconscious and that they were travelling at around 60mph.
He had to act quickly.
A SPLIT-SECOND DECISION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
With the car accelerating and the road ahead presenting serious dangers, Zac leaned across the cabin and grabbed the steering wheel.
Knowing they needed to stop before the vehicle struck a tree or left the road, he guided the car towards the central reservation.
The vehicle scraped and bumped along the barrier before finally coming to a halt.
It was an extraordinary act of bravery from a child suddenly forced to respond to an emergency that would challenge even many adults.
But Zac’s actions did not stop there.
Once the car had stopped, he turned off the engine and called 999 for help, remaining inside the vehicle while emergency services were contacted.
HE USED THE SATNAV TO HELP EMERGENCY SERVICES FIND THEM
Even after bringing the car to a stop, Zac remained remarkably composed.
He used the vehicle’s satellite navigation system to identify their exact location, helping emergency call handlers establish where they were on the A40.
During the call, Zac could be heard reassuring his unconscious mum while waiting for help to arrive.
His ability to communicate clearly, provide useful information and remain focused during such a frightening situation helped emergency responders locate them.
For Nicola, who was unable to call for help herself, her son’s quick thinking proved crucial.
NICOLA WAS UNCONSCIOUS FOR AROUND SEVEN MINUTES
Nicola had lost consciousness because of extremely low blood pressure and was subsequently taken to hospital for medical treatment.
She is now awaiting further cardiology tests and has been advised not to drive until her condition has been properly assessed.
The incident was a frightening reminder of how quickly a medical emergency can turn an ordinary journey into a potentially fatal situation.
For Nicola, knowing that her son had responded so decisively must make the experience all the more emotional.
At just 12 years old, Zac had found himself in an extraordinary situation and acted when his mum needed him most.
NOW, ZAC IS BEING HONOURED WITH A PRIDE OF BRITAIN AWARD
Zac’s courage has since been recognised with the Child of Courage Award at the Pride of Britain Awards in London.
The award celebrates young people who demonstrate extraordinary bravery, determination or compassion in the face of difficult circumstances.
His actions have captured the public’s attention because they show how a child’s ability to stay calm and think quickly can make an enormous difference during an emergency.
While the circumstances were terrifying, Zac’s response demonstrated remarkable presence of mind.
A SON HIS MUM CAN BE PROUD OF
Behind the headlines is a mother and son whose journey could have ended very differently.
Nicola was suddenly unable to control the vehicle, and Zac was faced with a decision no child should ever have to make. Yet he managed to help stop the car, contact emergency services and stay beside his mum until help arrived.
His story is not simply about bravery behind the steering wheel. It is also about a young person recognising that something was seriously wrong and doing everything he could to protect someone he loved.
Zac’s actions deserve recognition, and his story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of staying calm and seeking emergency help when a dangerous situation unfolds.
At just 12 years old, Zac showed extraordinary courage when his mum needed him most. His quick thinking helped bring a terrifying journey to an end — and now, he is receiving an award that celebrates the remarkable young person he is.
Congratulations, Zac. Your mum has every reason to be proud of you.
