“HE SAVED BOTH THEIR LIVES” — 12-YEAR-OLD BOY’S INCREDIBLE COURAGE AFTER MUM FAINTS AT 60MPH

Zac was just 12 years old when his mum suddenly lost consciousness behind the wheel. With their car accelerating out of control, the young boy made a split-second decision that may have saved them both.

What began as an ordinary journey to a Christmas market quickly turned into a terrifying fight for survival for young Zac and his mum, Nicola.

They were travelling along the A40 when Nicola suddenly became unwell. She managed to steer the car partly off the road before losing consciousness completely.

But the danger was far from over.

The automatic car remained in drive, and Nicola’s foot was jammed on the accelerator. The vehicle began veering back onto the dual carriageway, gathering speed as it headed towards potential disaster.

Zac looked across and realised his mum was unconscious.

At just 12 years old, he was suddenly faced with a situation that would frighten even many experienced drivers.

This is 12-year-old Zac and his mum Nicola. Zac was travelling in the passenger seat at 60mph when his mum suddenly passed out at the wheel. With his mum unconscious and herA SPLIT-SECOND DECISION

With the car speeding along the road, Zac knew he had to act quickly.

He leaned across the cabin, grabbed the steering wheel and guided the vehicle into the central reservation.

The car scraped and bumped along the barrier before finally coming to a stop.

It was an extraordinary act of courage from a child who had no time to hesitate.

Once the vehicle stopped, Zac turned off the engine and called 999. He remained inside the car and used the vehicle’s satnav to identify their exact location, helping emergency responders find them as quickly as possible.

Even during the emergency call, Zac could be heard reassuring his mum while waiting for help to arrive.

His calmness, quick thinking and determination in such a frightening moment would later earn him recognition for his bravery.

Nicola had lost consciousness for approximately seven minutes because of extremely low blood pressure.

She was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been awaiting further cardiology tests before being able to drive again.

For any parent, the thought of losing consciousness while driving with their child in the passenger seat is terrifying.

For Nicola, knowing that her young son had to respond to such a dangerous situation must make the experience all the more emotional.

Instead of being the one protecting her child, she was suddenly relying on Zac to help them survive.

And he rose to the challenge.

FROM HEROIC MOMENT TO PRIDE OF BRITAIN HONOUR

Zac’s extraordinary actions have earned him the Child of Courage Award at the Pride of Britain Awards in London.

The honour recognises young people who demonstrate remarkable bravery, resilience and selflessness in extraordinary circumstances.

For Zac, the recognition celebrates more than just a quick decision behind the wheel. It honours a young boy who faced a terrifying emergency, acted when it mattered most and helped get his mum to safety.

His story is a powerful reminder that courage is not about being fearless. Sometimes, it means finding the strength to act when you are frightened and the people you love are in danger.
