RUNNER, 24, DIES SUDDENLY DURING CARDIFF HALF MARATHON — HEARTBROKEN FAMILY PAYS EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE
He was young, fit and full of life. He had spent months preparing for the race, hoping to cross the finish line alongside his girlfriend. But just miles from the end, Ross Williams-Griffiths suffered a sudden cardiac arrest that claimed his life. Now, his grieving family hopes his story will help save others.
A 24-year-old runner has died after collapsing during the Cardiff Half Marathon, leaving his family, girlfriend and fellow runners devastated.
Ross Williams-Griffiths, from Bargoed in Caerphilly, Wales, was taking part in the race on Sunday, October 4, 2026, when he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest approximately 12 miles into the 13.1-mile course.
He was running alongside his girlfriend, Katie Bowen, when the tragedy occurred.
Despite receiving urgent medical attention from event and hospital medical teams, Ross could not be saved.
His death was confirmed by race organisers Run 4 Wales. More than two weeks later, his family released an emotional tribute describing a young man whose kindness, enthusiasm and love of sport had touched countless people.
For those who knew him, Ross was far more than a runner. He was a devoted partner, a much-loved son and brother, and a young man building a promising future.
HE HAD SPENT MONTHS PREPARING FOR THE RACE
Ross had trained for months in preparation for the half marathon, approaching the challenge with commitment and determination.
He and Katie were affectionately known as “Team Griff-Bow” and had entered the race to raise money for Tenovus Cancer Care, a Welsh charity supporting people affected by cancer.
Running was one of several sporting passions in Ross’s life. He also loved football, golf, snowboarding and bodyboarding, and was a keen goalkeeper.
More recently, he had begun attending runs with a local running club alongside his brother, Rhys, and Rhys’s fiancée, Jayde.
His family said he approached everything he did with enthusiasm, always eager to take on a new challenge.
The race was meant to be another milestone in that journey. Instead, it became the setting for a tragedy that no one close to him could have anticipated.
“KIND, CARING AND FULL OF LIFE”
In a statement released through Run 4 Wales, Ross’s family paid tribute to the young man they had lost.
They described him as kind, caring, generous and hard-working, saying he brought laughter, loyalty and warmth wherever he went.
They also recalled his ability to make people feel welcome, explaining that he was the kind of person who rarely had a bad word to say about anyone.
Ross had built a promising career with GE Aerospace and was admired by colleagues for his dedication and work ethic.
His family said the support they had received since his death had been overwhelming and thanked everyone who had offered kindness during their grief.
Their words painted a picture of a young man who loved sport, valued his relationships and had so much still to experience.
For his loved ones, the loss is not simply the death of a runner during a sporting event. It is the loss of a son, partner, brother and friend whose presence had brought happiness to those around him.
HIS FAMILY WANTS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST
Alongside their tribute, Ross’s family shared a message they hope could help prevent another family from experiencing similar heartbreak.
They said they were still waiting to learn the exact cause of his death, but hoped that sharing his story would raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest.
The family emphasised that Ross had been young, fit and healthy, and that he loved running and being part of its community.
Their message is particularly poignant because his death occurred during an event for which he had trained carefully over many months.
Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart abruptly stops pumping blood effectively. It is different from a heart attack, although a heart attack can sometimes trigger cardiac arrest.
The exact cause of Ross’s death has not been publicly established in the reports available, and his family’s statement makes clear that they are still awaiting answers.
They hope that helping others understand the importance of heart health and appropriate screening will become part of Ross’s lasting legacy.
A COMMUNITY REMEMBERS A MUCH-LOVED RUNNER
Ross’s death has affected not only his family and girlfriend but also the wider running community.
South Wales Striders, the local running club he had recently joined, remembered him as someone who always had a smile on his face and genuinely loved running.
Organisers of the Cardiff Half Marathon also expressed their condolences and said their thoughts remained with Ross’s family and friends.
Run 4 Wales chief executive Matt Newman praised the event and hospital medical teams for responding with extraordinary speed and professionalism.
He said the loss of a runner at one of the organisation’s events was deeply felt, adding that supporting Ross’s loved ones remained a priority.
The tributes reflect the impact he made in a relatively short time — not only through his sporting interests but through the warmth he brought to the people around him.
TURNING HEARTBREAK INTO A LASTING LEGACY
Ross’s family has encouraged people wishing to honour his memory to support fundraising efforts for cardiac screening.
They are also raising money for 2wish, a charity that supports families affected by the sudden and unexpected death of a child or young person.
Their hope is that the support generated by Ross’s story will help other families access support and potentially identify heart conditions before tragedy strikes.
For Katie, his family and his friends, however, no fundraising campaign can replace the person they have lost.
A race that began with months of preparation and the hope of completing a shared challenge ended in unimaginable grief.
Ross was only 24. He had a career ahead of him, sporting passions to pursue and countless memories still to make with the people he loved.
“If raising awareness in Ross’ memory helps even one family avoid the heartbreak we are experiencing, then that will be part of his lasting legacy,” his family said.
Rest in peace, Ross Williams-Griffiths. May your kindness, your love of life and the difference you made to others continue to be remembered.
