Father Patricio was celebrating Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, also known as Perpetuo Socorro, in Guayaquil. He was standing behind the altar, facing the congregation, when a large wooden crucifix mounted on the wall behind him suddenly tipped forward and fell.

The heavy structure struck the priest on the head, knocking him down behind the altar. He did not get back up.
