FLORIDA MOTHER ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY LEAVING FOUR CHILDREN HOME ALONE DURING LAS VEGAS WORK TRIP
Irene Miller, 50, faces four child neglect charges after deputies say they found her children, ages 9 to 14, without adult supervision. The investigation began when one child called 911 after a dumbbell fell on her younger brother’s head.
A 911 Call Leads Deputies to a Florida Home
A Florida mother was arrested after returning from a work trip to Las Vegas, following an incident in which one of her four children was injured while the siblings were allegedly left home alone.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a home on Parkway Boulevard in Kissimmee shortly after 8:30 p.m. on October 21, 2026, after receiving a 911 call from one of the children.
The child reported that a dumbbell had fallen on her nine-year-old brother’s head.
When deputies arrived, they found four children, ages 9, 11, 12 and 14, inside the home without an adult present. Emergency responders took the injured boy to Celebration Hospital for treatment. He was later discharged.
The incident prompted authorities to investigate the children’s supervision arrangements while their mother was away.
Mother Was in Las Vegas for Work
Investigators identified the children’s mother as Irene Miller, 50, of Kissimmee, Florida.
According to the sheriff’s office, Miller told a responding deputy by telephone that she was working in Las Vegas and expected to return to Florida on October 23.
Authorities said she had left on October 18, meaning the children were without an adult staying with them for several days.
Miller reportedly told deputies that she had arranged for a babysitter who travelled from Tampa to help the children get ready for school each morning and check on them after school.
However, the babysitter was not required to remain at the house overnight, according to investigators.
The children’s father was contacted and agreed to take all four children to his home while the investigation continued.
Deputies Waited for Her Return
Detectives arranged to meet Miller when she returned from Las Vegas on October 23.
According to reports, officers approached her as she exited her flight at Orlando International Airport and took her into custody. Body-camera footage released by authorities reportedly captured the arrest.
Miller was charged with four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and booked into the Orange County jail. The charges relate to the alleged lack of appropriate supervision of the four children.
The sheriff’s office said it would investigate cases involving concerns about children’s supervision and care.
As of the latest reports reviewed for this article, Miller had reportedly been released from custody. The available reports did not establish a final outcome in the criminal case.
The Children’s Safety Became the Immediate Priority
Following the incident, authorities contacted the children’s father, who agreed to care for them.
The nine-year-old boy’s injury brought the situation to the attention of emergency services, but officials said he was treated and discharged from the hospital.
The case has drawn attention to the risks that can arise when children are left without an adult available to respond to an emergency. Even when arrangements are made for someone to check on children during the day, unexpected incidents can occur during the hours when no responsible adult is present.
The allegations against Miller have not, however, been resolved in court, and she remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.
What Happens Next?
Miller faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. The available reporting does not confirm a final court ruling or sentence.
The investigation centres on the circumstances in which the children were left without overnight supervision, the arrangements made for their care and the injury that prompted the 911 call.
For now, the case serves as a reminder of the importance of reliable adult supervision and clear plans for children’s safety when a parent must travel.
The children were taken into their father’s care after the incident, while the criminal allegations against their mother remained unresolved in the reports reviewed.
