“WE WISH WE HAD MORE TIME” — SINGLE MOTHER RUMOR ORTIZ, 30, AND ROBERT GARCIA UMANZOR, 25, IDENTIFIED AFTER DEADLY HALLOWEEN BIKE RIDE

Two families are mourning loved ones after an alleged drunk driver struck a group of cyclists in Montclair, California. A candlelight vigil has brought friends and relatives together to remember the victims — while prosecutors have now filed murder charges against the accused driver.

A Halloween-themed bicycle ride that was meant to bring friends together ended in tragedy when two cyclists lost their lives after a car struck their group in Southern California.

The victims have been identified as Robert Garcia Umanzor, 25, known to friends as Bobby, and Rumor Ortiz, 30, a young mother.

The collision happened at approximately 10:39 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, as a group of around 30 cyclists travelled eastbound along Kingsley Street near Tudor Avenue in Montclair, California.

According to police, a vehicle struck several riders before the driver fled the scene.

Robert was pronounced dead at the scene. Rumor was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Two other cyclists were also hurt, including one who suffered major injuries and was reported to be in stable condition.

A BROTHER’S HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE TO RUMOR

Rumor’s death has devastated her family and friends.

Her brother shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, expressing how grateful he was to have had her as his sister and how deeply he wished they had been given more time together.

He asked her to watch over him from heaven and expressed hope that they would meet again in another life.

Friends also remembered Rumor as a warm, joyful person who brought happiness to the people around her.

Ani Fine, one of her friends, described her as kindhearted and someone who was always happy.

“She brought tremendous joy to the group,” Fine said.

Another friend, Leslie Hurtado, remembered Rumor as fun-loving and down to earth, expressing disbelief that her life had ended so suddenly.

Rumor was also remembered as a single mother to a young daughter.

Robert, affectionately known as Bobby, was remembered by friends and relatives as someone who loved being surrounded by people.

His aunt, Yoly Shively, attended a candlelight vigil held at the crash site on Monday evening.

She described her nephew as sociable, outgoing and someone who treasured spending time with family and friends.

“He just loved being around people. I know that, and he just loved our family,” she said.

Friends also remembered his infectious energy and love of cycling.

His family has established a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses as they navigate the emotional and financial challenges of losing him.

A VIGIL BRINGS A COMMUNITY TOGETHER

Approximately 100 people gathered near the intersection of Kingsley Street and Tudor Avenue on Monday to remember Robert and Rumor.

Flowers, candles and other tributes marked the location where the Halloween ride had turned into a devastating scene.

Friends, relatives and members of the cycling community stood together to remember the two riders and support their grieving families.

For those who knew them, the gathering was an opportunity to celebrate the lives they lived rather than remember only the circumstances of their deaths.

DRIVER FACES TWO MURDER CHARGES

Police identified the driver as 38-year-old Valentin Alberto Rodriguez of Montclair.

Investigators located him at his nearby residence and arrested him at approximately 2:40 a.m. on Sunday, October 25.

Authorities allege that he was driving under the influence, struck the cyclists and fled.

Reports from the scene also indicated that one of the victims was dragged for more than a mile after the collision.

On October 27, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office announced that Rodriguez had been charged with two counts of murder.

He also faces two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, two counts of driving under the influence causing injury, and a felony hit-and-run charge. Prosecutors have also filed special allegations relating to the deaths and his alleged flight from the scene.

The charges are allegations, and Rodriguez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

TWO LIVES, TWO FAMILIES LEFT GRIEVING

What began as a Halloween celebration among friends has left two families facing a future without people they loved.

Rumor’s daughter has lost her mother. Robert’s family is now preparing to say goodbye to a young man they described as full of life and love for those around him.

As the investigation and court proceedings continue, their loved ones are left holding onto memories, photographs and the words they wish they had more time to say.

Rest in peace, Rumor Ortiz and Robert Garcia Umanzor. 🕊️
