Brooklyn Jogger Katie Suarez, 28, Stabbed in Neck Minutes After Speaking to Her Parents as Police Hunt Attacker
Katie Suarez was out for a familiar run along a waterfront path when she was attacked. Her father later found her after she failed to arrive at the meeting point she had discussed with her parents.
A 28-year-old woman remains critically ill in hospital after being stabbed in the neck while jogging along a waterfront path in Brooklyn, New York.
Katie Suarez was running along the Shore Parkway Greenway in the Bath Beach neighbourhood shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, October 30, when she was attacked.
The case has taken an especially heartbreaking turn after reports revealed that Katie had spoken to her parents by phone just minutes before the assault, telling them she was only about half a mile away.
Her father would later find her collapsed on the path.
A final phone call with her parents
Katie had finished work at a TD Bank branch, where she worked as a teller, and met her mother outside the workplace at around 6:30 p.m.
According to reports citing law-enforcement sources, the family regularly met after her shifts. Her father was running late that evening, so Katie went for a solo run while waiting.
At approximately 8 p.m., her father called to ask where she was. Katie reportedly told him she was about half a mile away and expected to reach them within minutes.
When she failed to arrive, her parents tried calling again. This time, she did not answer.
The two began searching for their daughter, and her father eventually discovered her near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway, suffering from multiple stab wounds to her neck.
He desperately asked a passer-by to call 911.
Police investigate a possible random attack
Emergency responders transported Katie to NYU Langone Hospital, where she was reported to be in critical condition.
Reports about her precise medical status have differed. The New York Post, citing law-enforcement sources, reported that she had been declared brain-dead and remained on life support. Other reports, including statements from police to local media, described her condition as grave or critical.
Authorities have not publicly provided a definitive medical update confirming those conflicting descriptions.
Investigators believe the assault may have been random, although no motive has been officially established. Reports citing police sources said Katie’s phone and jewellery were still with her, and investigators had not identified evidence pointing to robbery or a sexual motive.
According to sources quoted by the New York Post, Katie managed to run approximately 100 feet after the attack before collapsing.
No suspect had been publicly identified and no arrest had been announced in the latest reports.
Major search for the attacker
The NYPD has deployed specialist teams as detectives work to identify the person responsible.
The search has involved officers on the ground, aviation teams, K-9 units, drones and scuba divers. Investigators are also reviewing available surveillance footage and appealing to anyone who may have witnessed something unusual.
Police are particularly interested in speaking with people who were near the eastbound bike path along the Belt Parkway, between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street, between approximately 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. on October 30.
CBS New York reported that a $10,000 reward was being offered for information leading to the person responsible.
Remembered as a kind and dedicated woman
Neighbours described Katie as a kind person with a good character.
She worked at the local bank and reportedly enjoyed running along the waterfront route. Reports also said she had been training for the New York City Marathon.
The marathon’s organisers expressed sympathy for her family and the running community following news of the attack.
For those who knew Katie, the incident has left a neighbourhood in shock. A familiar running route has become the centre of a major police investigation, while her family waits for answers.
