“WE’RE GOING TO CRASH INTO THE GROUND” — 20-Year-Old Female Pilot Among Nine Killed in Florida Learjet Disaster After Terrifying Final Radio Calls
💔 She was just 20 years old, had already logged more than 1,300 hours in the air and had achieved a dream many people spend a lifetime pursuing. Now, her family is mourning a young woman whose future in aviation appeared incredibly bright.
Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, a 20-year-old pilot from South Florida, has been identified as one of nine people who lost their lives when a private Learjet 60 crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
The aircraft went down in a residential area near Greenacres at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time. It had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
All nine people aboard — two crew members and seven passengers — were killed.
What makes the tragedy even more heartbreaking is the desperate sequence of radio communications recorded in the moments before the aircraft struck the ground.
A terrifying final emergency call
According to air traffic control recordings, the crew reported increasingly difficult conditions while flying at approximately 35,000 feet.
The pilot initially informed controllers that ice was accumulating on the aircraft and that moderate turbulence was causing the jet to move violently.
“We have light, clear ice that is manageable and moderate turbulence,” the pilot reported.
The crew requested permission to climb another 2,000 feet in an apparent attempt to find more favorable conditions.
But the situation deteriorated rapidly.
The aircraft began losing altitude at an alarming rate. The pilot then declared an emergency, transmitting increasingly urgent messages to air traffic control.
“We’re descending 8,000 — mayday, mayday — we’re descending 10,000 feet per minute,” the pilot reported.
Moments later, the situation became even more desperate.
“We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute.”
Then came the devastating warning:
“We’re going to crash into the ground.”
The aircraft was seen banking sharply to the right before plunging into the ground and erupting into a massive fireball.
The recordings have offered investigators a chilling account of the crew’s final attempts to communicate the unfolding emergency.
Who was Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras?
Behind the headlines was a young woman whose passion for flying began years before the fatal journey.
Nathalia grew up in Palm Beach County, Florida, and developed an interest in aviation after her father began flying recreationally in 2018.
By 2020, she was already taking ground-school courses and working toward her dream of becoming a pilot.
Her determination was remarkable.
In October 2023, at just 17 years old, Nathalia earned her pilot’s license while attending West Boca Raton Community High School.
At the time, she had already accumulated approximately 88 flight hours and was making headlines in local media for achieving her aviation milestone before even obtaining her driver’s license.
During an interview with CBS12, she joked about the unusual achievement.
“Definitely, I brag because people say, ‘Oh, you can’t drive,’ and I say, ‘Yeah, but I can fly.'”
It was a lighthearted comment that captured the confidence and enthusiasm she had for aviation.
By the time of the November 1 crash, Nathalia had reportedly accumulated more than 1,300 hours of flight experience.
Her mother, Camila Corteleti, described her daughter’s love of flying in an interview with The New York Times.
“She loved the freedom,” her mother said. “It was completely different seeing the world from the top.”
According to the Associated Press, Nathalia held a pilot rating for the Learjet 60 involved in the accident, although her license did not authorize her to act as pilot in command.
She was serving as the co-pilot on the flight.
Nine lives lost in a devastating crash
Nathalia was not the only person whose future was taken away in the tragedy.
The aircraft was also carrying technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp and their two young children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2.
Other victims identified by their families included Rachael Reed, Charmi Fehr and Anita Maria Cetina.
The families released a joint statement expressing their profound grief.
They remembered Adam and Helen as devoted parents and described their children as the light of their lives.
The statement also paid tribute to Rachael and Charmi, remembering their joy, adventurous spirits and deep love for the people around them.
Anita Maria Cetina was remembered for the tenderness and devotion she showed while caring for the children.
The families asked for privacy as they begin to process an unimaginable loss.
Investigators discover possible signs the aircraft broke apart midair
As investigators examine the wreckage, new details have emerged about the final moments of the flight.
During a news conference on November 2, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member Tom Chapman said investigators had found evidence suggesting that parts of the aircraft may have begun breaking apart before it hit the ground.
Former aviation investigators have suggested that possible damage to key components of the aircraft’s tail could have contributed to the loss of control.
Weather conditions, including thunderstorms, turbulence and reported ice accumulation, are major areas of focus.
However, investigators have not yet determined the definitive cause of the disaster.
The NTSB is continuing its examination of the wreckage and hopes to recover the aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder to help establish exactly what happened.
The tragedy also leaves an entire neighborhood shaken
The crash occurred close to homes and a mobile-home community, creating a huge crater in the roadway and scattering debris across the surrounding area.
Thick smoke and flames filled the scene as emergency crews rushed to respond.
Approximately 600 nearby residents were affected and required assistance with temporary shelter and other essential needs.
A driver near the crash site also suffered leg injuries, according to investigators.
Authorities have continued working to secure the area while federal investigators collect evidence.
A young dream that ended far too soon
For Nathalia’s family, this is more than a devastating aviation accident.
It is the loss of a daughter who discovered her passion at a young age, worked tirelessly toward her dream and had already achieved something extraordinary by the time she was 17.
She had spent years looking toward the sky, building experience and pursuing a future in aviation.
Now, the people who loved her are left with memories of a young woman whose journey ended far too soon.
And she was not alone. Eight other families are also facing the unimaginable pain of losing someone they loved.
Nine people boarded that Learjet on November 1. None made it to their destination.
May Nathalia and all eight other victims rest in peace. Our thoughts are with their families and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
