Josephine stared at the iron box in Jeffrey’s hands.

Josephine stared at the iron box in Jeffrey’s hands.
A small silver clasp held its lid shut. Her heart began pounding because she recognized it immediately.
It belonged to her father.
The same clasp she remembered from the old wooden chest that had disappeared shortly after his funeral.
“Where did you get that?” she whispered.
Jeffrey placed the box on the table.
“Your father gave me something before he died. Something certain men have spent years trying to find.”
Josephine shook her head.
“My father died in a mining accident. That’s what Uncle Arthur told me.”
“Your uncle lied.”
The words struck harder than a slap.
Jeffrey explained that her father had discovered evidence of a criminal operation involving stolen silver, falsified mining claims, and powerful businessmen who had been secretly stealing land from struggling families.
Before he could expose them, he was murdered.
The official report called it an accident.
Arthur had helped make sure nobody questioned it.
“And the thirty dollars?” Josephine asked.
Jeffrey’s expression darkened.
“Arthur wasn’t selling you a husband. He was selling you a chance to lead me to this box.”
Josephine stepped away from the table.
“Why would anyone think I know where it is?”
“Because your father trusted you with something before he died. Something you may not even remember.”
Suddenly, three sharp knocks echoed through the cabin.
Jeffrey extinguished the lantern.
“Stay behind me.”
Outside, a man’s voice called through the darkness.
“Ross! We know the girl is inside. Hand over the box, and nobody needs to get hurt.”
Josephine recognized the voice.
It belonged to her uncle Arthur.
Her knees nearly gave way.
Jeffrey quietly opened a hidden compartment beneath the floorboards and removed a revolver.
“Listen carefully,” he whispered. “The reason I’ve pretended to be crippled for two years is that the men hunting your father believe I’m dead. If they discover who I really am, neither of us will leave this mountain alive.”
Josephine looked at the man standing before her.
The supposedly helpless husband she had married that afternoon was now holding a weapon, protecting her from the very people who had destroyed her family.
But there was something else.
Jeffrey opened the iron box and removed a folded piece of paper bearing her father’s handwriting.
He handed it to her.
Josephine read the first sentence.
Then her entire world seemed to collapse.
Her father had written that Arthur Wright was not merely involved in the conspiracy.
He was the man who had ordered the murder.
Another crash shook the cabin door.
Jeffrey raised his revolver.
“Josephine, there’s one more thing you need to know.”
He looked directly into her eyes.
“Your father didn’t leave that fortune to me. He left it to you. And the key to claiming it is hidden somewhere only you can find.”
Outside, Arthur shouted again.
“Open this door! She’s my property!”
Josephine slowly folded the letter.
For the first time that night, she wasn’t afraid of the men outside.
She was ready to discover the truth.
And Jeffrey was about to reveal why he had waited two years for her arrival.
