GRANDMOTHER, 69, DIES TRYING TO SAVE HER 10-YEAR-OLD GRANDDAUGHTER FROM ROUGH SEAS IN SPAIN — FAMILY PAYS HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE
Teresa Ford rushed into the water when her granddaughter was swept toward a rocky cove in Menorca. The little girl survived, but her grandmother never made it back to shore.
A British grandmother lost her life while trying to save her 10-year-old granddaughter after strong winds and dangerous sea currents swept the child away from the shore during a family holiday in Spain.
Teresa Ford, 69, died on October 28 at Cavalleria Beach in Menorca, on what was supposed to be the family’s final full day of vacation.
The family had been enjoying a week away and was preparing to return to the United Kingdom the following day.
But an afternoon by the sea turned into a devastating emergency when powerful gusts pushed the young girl, who was on an inflatable, toward a rocky area. The inflatable overturned, throwing her into the water.
Her mother, father and grandmother rushed to help.
The child survived. Teresa did not.
A DESPERATE RESCUE ATTEMPT
According to an account shared by Teresa’s son, Andy Ford, his wife Rachel initially recognized the danger and urged everyone to return to shore.
However, the family was already struggling against the current.
Andy said his father managed to push Rachel toward the rocks before being swept away himself.
Teresa, who had been watching from the shore, saw her granddaughter in danger and entered the water.
Her son said she had an injured shoulder, a hip replacement and was not a strong swimmer. Despite those difficulties, she could not stand by while her granddaughter needed help.
Rachel eventually reached the child and managed to get her onto the rocks.
But the situation remained extremely dangerous. The waves continued breaking against the rocks, leaving Rachel and her daughter in need of assistance.
A STRANGER RISKED HIS LIFE TO HELP
As the family struggled, an unidentified beachgoer noticed what was happening and decided to intervene.
According to Andy, the man tied a rope around his waist and used a large plastic container to help him stay afloat as he entered the water.
Rachel handed their daughter to the stranger and urged him to take the child to safety.
But the man refused to leave until he had also helped rescue Rachel.
Both mother and daughter eventually made it out of the water.
Andy later expressed his gratitude toward the stranger, saying the family did not know who he was or how to find him.
His father also survived, although he suffered cuts and injuries after being dragged against the rocks.
Teresa, however, could not be saved.
A HUSBAND OF 45 YEARS LEFT HEARTBROKEN
The tragedy has left the family struggling to understand how an ordinary holiday could end in such devastating circumstances.
Andy said his father had been swept away and did not know how long he had been in the water.
At one point, he believed his daughter and granddaughter had both died. He thought Teresa was the only family member who had survived.
When he was finally able to stand and saw his wife’s body on the shore, he reportedly could not comprehend what had happened.
The couple had been married for 45 years.
In an emotional account, Andy described the unimaginable pain of losing his mother while knowing that she had entered the water simply because she wanted to protect her granddaughter.
“MY DAUGHTER IS ALREADY SAYING IT WAS HER FAULT”
Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of the family’s ordeal is the emotional impact on the 10-year-old girl.
Andy revealed that his daughter has already begun blaming herself for her grandmother’s death.
He said he wants her to grow up understanding that Teresa’s decision came from love, not from anything the child did wrong.
His family is now trying to help the little girl process what happened and understand that she was not responsible for the tragedy.
The family has also been left with questions about the safety arrangements at Cavalleria Beach.
FAMILY QUESTIONS WHY THERE WERE NO LIFEGUARDS OR WARNING SIGNS
In an open letter to local mayor Joan Palliser, Andy questioned why there were no lifeguards or visible warnings about dangerous currents at the beach.
He said his family had not seen signs alerting visitors to the risks posed by the sea conditions.
The seasonal lifeguard service at Cavalleria Beach had ended on October 15, nearly two weeks before the incident.
Mayor Palliser acknowledged that the beach is particularly exposed to strong northerly winds and that currents were present on the day of the tragedy.
He also expressed his condolences to the family.
Authorities are investigating the incident, which has been treated as an accidental drowning.
Andy said he wants answers and hopes changes will be made so that another family does not experience the same loss.
A GRANDMOTHER REMEMBERED FOR HER LOVE
Teresa’s death has left a family grieving a woman who had been part of their lives for decades.
She leaves behind her husband of 45 years, her children and grandchildren.
For her granddaughter, the memories of that holiday will forever be connected to the moment her grandmother entered the water to help her.
But Andy wants his daughter to remember something more important: Teresa acted because she loved her.
A family holiday that was meant to end with happy memories instead became a tragedy that changed their lives.
And as they mourn Teresa, they are also searching for answers — and hoping that her final act of courage will help prevent another family from facing the same heartbreak.
