PART 2: THE LAND HER FATHER LEFT HER

PART 2: THE LAND HER FATHER LEFT HER
Before sunrise, Grayson had carried Catherine to a small bed near the fireplace. He cleaned the cut on her lip, wrapped her injured shoulder, and placed fresh water beside her.

Catherine watched him quietly.

“Why would a stranger risk his life for me?”

Grayson stared into the fire.

“Years ago, someone heard my wife screaming and decided it wasn’t their business. I arrived too late. I’ve regretted that silence every day since.”

For the first time, Catherine understood the sadness behind his rugged face.

At daylight, Grayson rode to Miller’s Crossing and brought Judge Harlan Croft back to the homestead. The judge examined the forged deed, listened to Catherine’s testimony, and immediately sent for the sheriff.

Caleb and Jedediah were arrested before they could leave town. Their threats and forged signatures became evidence against them.

But the greatest surprise came when Judge Croft revealed another document hidden among Catherine’s father’s papers.

Her father had known his sons might someday return to steal the land. He had placed the entire property, including its valuable water rights, under Catherine’s sole legal protection.

The ranch was hers beyond dispute.

Weeks passed. Catherine slowly recovered, repaired the broken kitchen table, and returned to tending her cattle. Grayson continued visiting, sometimes bringing firewood, sometimes helping mend fences.

He never treated her as helpless. He listened when she spoke and respected her decisions.

One evening, Catherine stood beside him on the porch, watching the sun disappear behind the Montana mountains.

“I used to think being alone meant being safe,” she said.

Grayson gently took her hand.

“Being strong doesn’t mean you must face everything alone.”

For the first time in years, Catherine smiled without fear.

And when Grayson asked whether he might stay through the coming winter, she looked toward the warm cabin and answered:

“Only if you promise to come home every evening.”

He smiled.

The mountains had brought him to her because of a scream. But it was the quiet courage of the woman he found that finally gave him a reason to stay.
