GONE TOO SOON: THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF NATHALIA GADELHA FILGUEIRAS, THE 20-YEAR-OLD PILOT WHO WAS BORN TO FLY
FLORIDA, UNITED STATES — November 6, 2026
At an age when many young people are only beginning to figure out their future, Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras had already taken to the skies and built a career around the passion she had dreamed of pursuing.
She earned her pilot’s license at just 17, before obtaining her driver’s license. By the age of 20, she had reportedly accumulated approximately 1,300 flight hours and was already working professionally as a pilot.
But on November 1, 2026, her promising journey came to a heartbreaking end when the Learjet 60 she was serving as co-pilot aboard crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida. All nine people on board lost their lives.
Her passing has left her family, friends and members of the aviation community mourning a young woman whose determination and natural ability had taken her further than many could imagine.
A DREAM THAT BEGAN IN HIGH SCHOOL
Nathalia’s passion for aviation developed while she was still a teenager.
She began taking flying lessons in 2020 and received guidance from her father, who was also a pilot. Rather than seeing flying as a distant ambition, she committed herself to learning the skills needed to make it her profession.
While attending West Boca Raton Community High School in Florida, she joined the school’s aviation academy program.
In 2023, at just 17 years old, she earned her private pilot’s license.
The achievement attracted attention because she had reached a milestone that many people only dream of — becoming a licensed pilot before she had even obtained a driver’s license.
In an earlier interview, Nathalia spoke with excitement about being able to fly aircraft while still being a teenager.
For her, flying was not simply an unusual hobby. It was the beginning of the career she wanted to build.
1,300 FLIGHT HOURS BY THE AGE OF 20
Nathalia continued developing her aviation skills after earning her license.
According to her family, she had accumulated approximately 1,300 flight hours by the time of the crash. She had also been working professionally as a commercial pilot for around nine months.
She was employed by Upper Jets, a private charter aviation company based in Florida.
Her ambition was to continue advancing in the industry and eventually become an airline pilot.
For someone so young, her progress was remarkable.
Her former flight instructor, Chris Kirk, later remembered her as one of the most naturally gifted students he had taught during his decades in aviation.
He praised her abilities, describing her as someone who seemed born to fly.
Those who watched her journey saw a young woman who was not afraid to pursue an ambitious dream — and who worked tirelessly to turn it into reality.
THE FINAL FLIGHT
On Sunday, November 1, Nathalia was serving as co-pilot aboard a Learjet 60 traveling from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas.
The aircraft encountered difficult weather conditions while flying over South Florida.
According to air traffic control recordings, the crew reported turbulence and ice accumulating on the aircraft. The pilots also requested permission to climb to a higher altitude.
The situation then deteriorated rapidly.
The aircraft began losing altitude at an alarming rate, and a pilot transmitted emergency calls to air traffic control.
The Learjet ultimately crashed near Greenacres in Palm Beach County, erupting into flames.
All nine people aboard were killed.
The victims included Nathalia, the other pilot and several passengers, including members of a family traveling together.
Federal investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. The cause has not yet been established.
HER FAMILY’S HEARTBREAK
For Nathalia’s family, the loss is almost impossible to put into words.
Her mother, Camila, and stepfather, Thiago Corteleti, spoke publicly about the young pilot’s passion for flying and the extraordinary path she had taken.
Her mother had always been proud of her daughter’s determination, even while carrying the fears that can come with having a child working in aviation.
In an emotional reflection, she spoke about knowing how deeply Nathalia loved flying and how proud she was that her daughter had been able to live her dream.
Nathalia would have celebrated her 21st birthday in January.
She had so much more she wanted to accomplish, so many more places to see and so many opportunities ahead of her.
Instead, her family is left remembering the daughter who had worked so hard to reach the skies.
A LEGACY THAT WILL LIVE ON
Nathalia’s story is a reminder of how far determination and passion can take someone, even at a young age.
She earned her pilot’s license while still in high school, built hundreds of hours of experience and entered the professional aviation world before turning 21.
Her journey was short, but it was filled with ambition, courage and a love for flying that those closest to her will never forget.
The aviation community has lost a young talent, and her family has lost someone irreplaceable.
She may have had only 20 years on this earth, but in those years, Nathalia had already begun building the life she dreamed of.
Rest in peace, Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras. You followed your dream into the skies, and your story will continue to inspire those who dare to reach for their own. 🕊️❤️
