Newborn Safely Rescued After Cries Lead Bystanders to Storm Drain Discovery

When the first rescuers arrived, the baby girl was submerged about 2 meters underwater, while the sewer pipe was about 5-6 meters deep and 30 cm in diameter.
Recently, while taking a morning walk, Lyron Lovdale, a resident of Durban, South Africa, suddenly heard strange crying coming from under a sewer pipe.

At first, he thought it was a cat meowing, but after listening carefully, Lyron became certain it was a baby crying.
At this point, Lyron decided to lift the manhole cover, shine a flashlight down, and was shocked to find a naked newborn baby girl trapped underneath.
He immediately called the police and rescue team to save the baby girl.

Upon arrival, the rescue team reported that the baby girl was trapped under the sewer pipe and being swept away by the water.
They had to dig a trench, following the sewer pipe to track the baby girl’s whereabouts and find a way to reach her. Finally, after three hours of rescue efforts, the baby girl was safely brought out.
Rescuers then wrapped her in a towel to keep her warm and transported her to the hospital by helicopter. Although she survived, her health is currently very weak.

Robert McKenzie, spokesperson for the Emergency Medical Services, said: “It’s a miracle that the newborn survived after being trapped for hours in the storm drain.
When the first rescuers arrived, the baby girl was submerged about 2 meters, while the drain was about 5-6 meters deep and 30 cm in diameter.

Currently, the baby girl is in stable condition, and our helicopter transported her to the hospital for medical care.”
The baby was named Storm by local residents, after what she went through.
South African police have confirmed that abandoning a newborn baby in a sewer is considered attempted murder. Police are currently actively investigating the identity of the child’s parents.
