Historic Milestone in Ridglan Farms Beagle Rescue as 1,000 Dogs Freed
A major milestone has been achieved in one of the largest beagle rescue operations in recent history. Big Dog Ranch Rescue has officially removed all 1,000 beagles it purchased from the Wisconsin breeding and research facility, Ridglan Farms, marking a critical step toward ending years of suffering for these dogs.
The Next Phase of Rescue Efforts
With the initial 1,000 dogs now safe, the Center for a Humane Economy is preparing to rescue the remaining 500 dogs included in its agreement with the facility. The effort is a coordinated operation aimed at rehabilitating and relocating every dog affected.
At a staging ranch in Dane County, newly rescued beagles are receiving comprehensive care. Each dog undergoes medical examinations, vaccinations, and microchipping, followed by rehabilitation support to help them adjust to life outside confinement. For many, this is the first time they have experienced grass beneath their paws, fresh air, or the simple joy of human affection and play.
Emotional First Encounters
Rescue teams described profoundly emotional scenes as the beagles ran freely for the first time. Many of the dogs displayed signs of joy and curiosity that had likely been suppressed during years in a breeding and research environment.
“This is something we’ve all been fighting for,” said Lauree Simmons, a representative involved in the rescue. “To watch them walk on grass and smell fresh air for the first time…it’s all worth it.”
A Second Chance at Life
For years, the dogs at Ridglan Farms lived under restrictive and controlled conditions, bred for research purposes and deprived of normal canine experiences. The rescue operation not only frees the animals from physical confinement but also gives them a chance at a life filled with love, care, and companionship.
The ongoing rehabilitation includes socialization, behavioral support, and preparation for adoption, ensuring that these dogs can transition successfully into permanent homes. For the rescue teams, the work is both a logistical challenge and a deeply rewarding mission.
Raising Awareness for Animal Welfare
The Ridglan Farms operation has drawn widespread attention from animal welfare advocates and the public, shining a spotlight on the ethical concerns surrounding breeding and research facilities. The rescue is a testament to the power of coordinated advocacy, legal action, and community support in creating meaningful change for vulnerable animals.
As the next phase begins, rescuers remain committed to their mission: providing every beagle from Ridglan Farms with a second chance at life, demonstrating compassion, perseverance, and the transformative impact of dedicated animal welfare efforts.
