QUAKE TRAGEDY: ‘Tens of thousands’ feared dead after powerful earthquakes strike Venezuela

Two massive earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, triggering widespread destruction, building collapses, and fears of a catastrophic death toll.

The quakes hit in quick succession near the northern coast, close to Caracas. The first 7.2-magnitude foreshock struck around 6:04 p.m. local time, followed just 39–40 seconds later by the stronger 7.5-magnitude mainshock. Both were shallow, intensifying the damage.

Widespread Destruction in Caracas and Beyond

Residents reported intense shaking that caused buildings to sway violently, shatter windows, and collapse. Emergency services rushed to search through rubble for survivors, with dramatic images showing damaged structures, debris-filled streets, and people fleeing into the open.

Power outages affected large areas, including the capital Caracas. Social media videos captured the chaos as crowds gathered in streets amid panic. The quakes were also felt in neighboring Colombia, where alarms sounded and evacuations occurred.

High Casualties and Tsunami Concerns

Officials and experts warned of “high casualties” and potentially widespread damage. Some reports fear that tens of thousands could be dead or missing as rescue operations continue amid aftershocks. Hospitals treated injured people, and several individuals remained trapped under rubble.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for parts of the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and islands like Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire, though the immediate threat level varied.

Many Venezuelans were at home celebrating a public holiday when the disaster struck. One elderly resident compared it to a previous major quake, calling it “horrible.”

Ongoing Response

Rescue teams continue searching collapsed buildings. Authorities urge people to stay outdoors where possible due to aftershock risks. Airports, schools, and other services faced disruptions.

This event marks one of the strongest seismic events in Venezuela in decades. Further updates on casualties and damage are expected as assessments continue.
