Michigan Parents Charged After 7-Year-Old Boy Dies Weighing 255 Pounds Following Alleged Years of Neglect

Michigan Parents Charged After Death of 7-Year-Old Son Who Weighed 255 Pounds
A Michigan couple has been charged with second-degree murder, torture, and multiple counts of child abuse following the death of their 7-year-old son, Casper O’Brien, in a case that prosecutors have described as one of “extraordinary and terrible neglect.”

Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, both of Flint Township, were arrested months after their son’s death as investigators completed an extensive review of the circumstances surrounding the case. The couple is currently being held without bond while criminal proceedings continue.
Child Died After Medical Emergency
According to investigators, emergency responders were called to the family’s home on November 4, 2025, after Casper stopped breathing. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined that Casper died from dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease affecting the heart muscle that can lead to heart failure. Medical officials listed morbid obesity as a contributing factor. At the time of his death, the 7-year-old reportedly stood approximately 4 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 255 pounds.
Prosecutors Allege Years of Severe Neglect
Genesee County prosecutors allege Casper endured years of neglect that affected nearly every aspect of his life.
According to court documents and statements from prosecutors, the child had attended school only never—remaining entirely outside the education system—and reportedly visited a doctor just once during his lifetime despite the family having health insurance. Authorities also allege he did not receive appropriate follow-up medical care after being referred to a specialist.
Investigators further claim Casper was largely immobile before his death and lived in unsanitary conditions inside the family home, which was described as severely cluttered and filled with trash. Prosecutors allege he suffered bed sores, skin rashes, and other preventable medical complications.
Younger Sister Removed From Home
Authorities said the couple’s 5-year-old daughter was also living in the residence. She has since been removed from the home and placed into protective care.
Prosecutors stated that neither child had been enrolled in school and that child welfare agencies had reportedly never been involved with the family prior to the investigation.
Parents Face Serious Criminal Charges
Damien and Jessica O’Brien each face charges including:
- Second-degree murder
- Torture
- Multiple counts of second-degree child abuse
Prosecutors argue the alleged neglect was so severe that it directly contributed to Casper’s death. The defendants have not entered final pleas regarding the allegations, and their case will proceed through the Michigan court system. Defense attorneys have indicated they will address the allegations during the legal process.
Community Reacts to Tragic Case
The case has generated widespread public attention and renewed discussion about child welfare, access to medical care, and how vulnerable children can remain unnoticed by public institutions.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Casper’s life and death as the criminal case moves forward.
Disclaimer: The charges against Damien and Jessica O’Brien are allegations. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
