The body of 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla, affectionately known to her friends as “Cake,” was discovered crammed inside a suitcase abandoned near railway tracks, sending shockwaves through the coastal city 150 kilometres east of Bangkok.

Australian man Simon Peter Carman, 45, has been charged with murder, concealment of a body, moving or destroying a body, and taking a minor for sexual purposes. He was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport just as he was attempting to board a flight back to Australia.

CCTV footage reviewed by Thai police allegedly shows Carman entering a condominium with Tunchanok, later leaving alone with a suitcase, and placing it on a motorcycle before heading to a grassy area near the railway line where her body was eventually found.

Carman denies all allegations and claims self-defense, stating that the teenager threatened him during an argument.

The investigation is moving quickly and methodically. Forensic testing, including an autopsy to determine if the teenager was drugged, is underway. Police are also examining the cluttered condominium room where the incident allegedly occurred, filled with clothing, bottles, and personal items.

One of Tunchanok’s friends visited the room in the aftermath of her disappearance, searching desperately for answers in the chaotic space.

Tunchanok’s final messages to friends, sent just before the end, offered a poignant glimpse into her last moments – she described the room as messy and confirmed her arrival, a digital reassurance meant to ease concerns from afar.

Her family is consumed by grief. Her father, Thongchai Donhomla, is struggling to accept the loss of his daughter. Her stepmother has demanded the harshest punishment possible if the suspect is convicted, refusing any financial restitution and insisting her daughter’s dignity is not for sale.

Carman, a former truck driver from Western Australia who had relocated to Thailand in late 2025, is now in custody in Pattaya Prison. He is expected to plead not guilty, relying on his self-defense claim.

The case has drawn intense international scrutiny due to the cross-border elements, with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade providing consular assistance.

Thai police colonel Anek Srathongyoo stated that “Carman claimed the teenager had threatened him,” a statement that remains central to the proceedings as evidence is gathered.
