A new chapter has begun in the closely watched case involving Karmelo Anthony, the Texas teenager convicted following the 2025 track-meet confrontation in which 17-year-old Austin Metcalf lost his life.

Six attorneys have joined Anthony’s defense team pro bono, replacing his previous counsel and reviewing the trial record as they pursue post-conviction relief and an appeal. Anthony, now 19, was convicted in June 2026 and sentenced to 35 years in prison.

⚖️ His new lawyers have since requested a new trial and asked that District Judge John Roach be removed from the remaining post-trial proceedings. The defense alleges that constitutional and procedural errors affected the trial, including issues surrounding Anthony’s decision not to testify and restrictions on courtroom access.

These filings do not reverse the conviction. The court must now consider the defense’s arguments, and prosecutors maintain that the original proceedings were fair.
