Late last year, a concerning call reached the team at Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center about a small animal in distress. A resident in Mesa, Arizona, had discovered a skunk trapped inside a recycling bin while taking out the trash — and it was clear the situation was urgent.

Berk Martineau, a member of the rescue team, responded quickly and arrived at the scene as fast as possible. What he found was both alarming and heartbreaking. The tiny striped skunk had somehow gotten its head stuck in the small circular drain opening at the bottom of the bin, leaving it unable to free itself.

The animal’s face had become noticeably swollen, likely from the pressure and the prolonged struggle to escape. Exhausted and frightened, the skunk was completely helpless.

Recognizing the urgency, Martineau carefully assessed the situation and got to work. Using patience and precision, he managed to safely free the skunk without causing further harm. Throughout the rescue, he remained calm and gentle, ensuring the animal stayed as stress-free as possible.

Once released, the skunk was finally able to move freely again. Despite the ordeal, it was expected to recover, thanks to the timely intervention.

This rescue serves as a reminder of how everyday objects can become dangerous traps for wildlife — and how quick action and compassion can make all the difference.
