Kaylee Hottle, the young deaf actress best known for her role as Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), has died at the age of 18 following a fatal single-vehicle car crash early Tuesday morning.

According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred around 2:52 a.m. on Windsor Road in Ijamsville. A 1995 Honda Accord driven by a 19-year-old man left the roadway at excessive speed and struck a culvert. Hottle was one of two passengers in the vehicle. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The other passenger declined medical treatment at the scene. Hottle was airlifted to a trauma center but was pronounced dead after her heart stopped en route.

On July 22, the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner officially confirmed the cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries. The manner of death was ruled an accident. The investigation remains ongoing, with excessive speed identified as a contributing factor.

Hottle’s father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed the tragic news in an emotional Facebook livestream conducted in American Sign Language. Speaking from the airport as he prepared to fly from Texas to Maryland to claim his daughter’s body, he said:

“I am very grateful for the 18 years we had together — and wish we had more. I have forgiven the driver. Don’t let this incident ruin the rest of your life.”

Her mother, Ketsi Hottle, also shared a heartfelt message, saying she still feels her daughter’s presence.

The Texas School for the Deaf, where Hottle was a senior, issued a statement expressing profound sadness and established a temporary memorial vigil outside the campus gates.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Kaylee Hottle came from a multi-generational deaf family and was fluent in American Sign Language. She rose to prominence with her breakout role as Jia, the orphaned girl who communicates with Kong through sign language. She also appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I. and had been cast in the upcoming film What Doesn’t Kill Us.
