Photographer Taking Sunrise Photos Finds 300-Pound Animal Hopelessly Trapped
As a professional photographer and owner of DeVine Portraits in Palm City, Florida, Suzanne Cosme is trained to notice the smallest details — the subtle shifts in light, the textures of the landscape, the unexpected beauty hidden in ordinary moments. But during a quiet solo sunrise shoot at House of Refuge beach, she encountered something she never could have anticipated.
The morning had begun like any other. The sky was just beginning to glow with soft hues of orange and pink, and the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the rocky shoreline created a peaceful atmosphere. Cosme was focused on capturing the perfect shot when something unusual caught her eye — a large, brown shape wedged tightly between the rocks.
“At first, I thought it was just a piece of driftwood,” Cosme later recalled. “It didn’t seem out of place at all.”

The loggerhead, weighing nearly 300 pounds, was trapped between the jagged rocks, her body awkwardly wedged and unable to move freely. “My heart dropped,” Cosme said. “It was such a surreal and emotional moment. You don’t expect to see something like that, especially so early in the morning, when everything feels calm and still.”
Realizing the urgency of the situation, Cosme immediately took action. She contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, carefully explaining what she had found. Knowing that approaching or handling the turtle herself could cause further harm, she kept a respectful distance, staying nearby to monitor the animal while waiting anxiously for help to arrive.
Time seemed to move slowly.
Roughly 40 minutes later, rescue finally arrived. An officer from the institute, along with firefighters from Martin County Fire Rescue, carefully made their way across the rocks toward the stranded turtle. The team quickly assessed her condition, speaking calmly as they coordinated their next steps.
Using a specialized rescue board, they gently maneuvered the heavy animal free from the rocks. It was a delicate process — one wrong move could have caused injury — but their experience and patience paid off. Inch by inch, they lifted and carried her toward the shoreline.
As soon as the turtle felt the proximity of the water, something remarkable happened.
She came alive.
With renewed energy, she began moving her flippers, instinctively recognizing the ocean just ahead. The rescuers lowered her carefully, and within moments, she started paddling forward, slipping back into the waves where she belonged.
“It was incredibly moving,” Cosme said. “I actually teared up watching her disappear into the ocean. It felt like witnessing something sacred — a life being given a second chance. That moment will stay with me forever.”
Thankfully, the turtle appeared to be in good health despite her ordeal — a testament to both her resilience and the timely intervention of the rescue team.
For Cosme, the experience was more than just an unexpected encounter — it was a powerful reminder.
