In 1978, Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross traveled to England to make a supernatural horror movie about an American couple trapped inside an eerie country estate.

Few people involved could have imagined that The Legacy would leave behind a very different kind of legacy.

The film paired Elliott and Ross as Pete Danner and Maggie Walsh, two Americans drawn into a sinister mystery at an English mansion. Away from the supernatural dangers unfolding on camera, the production brought the two actors together personally. A relationship grew from that period, eventually leading to marriage, a daughter and one of Hollywood’s most enduring partnerships.

Nearly five decades later, Elliott and Ross are still together.

Their story is often described as beginning on The Legacy. But there is an important twist: it was not actually the first movie they shared.

Sam Elliott Had Noticed Her Years Earlier

Almost a decade before The Legacy, both actors appeared in the 1969 classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Their positions in Hollywood could hardly have been more different.

Ross was already a prominent actress. Her performance as Elaine Robinson in The Graduate had earned her an Academy Award nomination, and in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, she played Etta Place opposite Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

Elliott, meanwhile, was still near the beginning of his screen career. His role was so small that he was credited as Card Player No. 2.

Years later, Elliott recalled that he never seriously considered approaching Ross. She was the leading lady, while he jokingly described himself as little more than a “glorified extra” lingering in the background.

They occupied the same film set, but their lives did not yet come together.

That would change in 1978.

The Legacy Put Them Side by Side

Production on The Legacy began in England in January 1978 and continued through March. The movie, directed by Richard Marquand, filmed at Bray Studios as well as several locations around England, including Loseley Park in Surrey, which provided the imposing estate seen in the film.

This time, Elliott was not hidden somewhere in the background.

He and Ross were the central couple.

Ross played Maggie Walsh, while Elliott portrayed Pete Danner. Their characters arrive in England and become caught in a disturbing series of events involving a mysterious gathering at an isolated mansion.

The movie itself would receive a mixed response after its release. Yet its importance in the actors’ personal history ultimately became much larger than its box-office or critical legacy.

Working closely together gave Elliott and Ross an opportunity they never had on Butch Cassidy. The production brought them into each other’s orbit as equals, and their connection developed around that period. Ross’ previous marriage ended afterward, and she and Elliott became a couple.

For Elliott, the woman he had once watched from a distance was suddenly part of his everyday life.

And unlike many Hollywood romances, this one did not disappear after the cameras stopped rolling.

Six Years Later, They Married

Elliott and Ross remained together through the years that followed The Legacy. Photographs from the early 1980s show them attending Hollywood and entertainment events side by side, long before they officially became husband and wife.

They married in May 1984.

It was Elliott’s first marriage. Ross had previously been married four times.

A few months after their wedding, they welcomed their daughter, Cleo Rose Elliott. She later pursued music rather than following her parents into acting.

By then, Elliott’s own career was steadily developing into the one audiences recognize today. His deep voice, unmistakable mustache and rugged screen presence would eventually make him one of Hollywood’s most recognizable Western figures.

Ross already had landmark films including The Graduate, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Stepford Wives behind her.

Yet their careers did not force them permanently onto separate paths.

Sometimes, they brought work home together.

Their Relationship Became a Creative Partnership, Too

Over the decades, Elliott and Ross appeared together in projects including Travis McGee, Houston: The Legend of Texas and the Western Conagher.

They reunited onscreen again in the 2017 drama The Hero, although with an ironic casting choice: Elliott and Ross, married for decades in real life, played a divorced couple.

Elliott has spoken warmly about working alongside his wife. In a 2017 interview, he explained that they enjoyed preparing material together before arriving on set and said opportunities to act together simply did not come often enough.

That shared creative understanding appears to have become one element of a much larger partnership.

When discussing why their marriage endured, Elliott has avoided presenting it as something effortless or magical.

His explanation has been considerably simpler: they love each other, they work at the relationship, and both people have to genuinely want the marriage to succeed.

As he once put it, “it takes wanting to be married.”

It is a remarkably practical description of a romance that has lasted through decades in an industry famous for change.

From a 1978 Film Set to the 2026 Red Carpet

The clearest evidence that their story is still continuing came decades after The Legacy.

On March 1, 2026, Elliott and Ross walked the red carpet together at the Actor Awards in Los Angeles.

Elliott was 81. Ross was 86.

Wearing coordinated black outfits, they posed together for photographers more than four decades after their wedding and nearly half a century after the film that brought them close. Their daughter, Cleo, was still part of the moment as well, helping Ross with her hair and makeup for the event.

The appearance also puts the popular “47 years later” description of their romance into perspective. That figure circulated while looking back on their 1978 meeting, but by 2026 their relationship traces back roughly 48 years. They have now been married for 42 years.

The numbers are striking, but perhaps the most compelling part of the story remains the contrast between its beginning and where they ended up.

In 1969, Sam Elliott was a barely noticed supporting player who did not believe he had much chance of even speaking to Katharine Ross.

Nine years later, another movie put them together.

The film was about curses, secrets and death inside a dark English mansion. It was never destined to become either actor’s most celebrated work.

But The Legacy gave them something neither could have predicted when filming began in the winter of 1978.

It gave them each other.

And nearly half a century later, that may be the most enduring legacy the movie ever created.
