New details from a three-month investigation into a devastating Plant City, Florida, murder-suicide are raising difficult questions about what happened in the days before 27-year-old Hailey Dempsey killed her mother and two of her young daughters.

POLICE HAD ALREADY BEEN TO THE HOME

According to investigators, officers responded to the family’s home three times in the two days before the killings.

The calls reportedly involved escalating disputes and concerns raised by Dempsey, including an argument involving explicit material found on her husband’s phone and fears that she was being tracked.

Then, on May 3, everything changed.

A MOTHER, A GRANDMOTHER AND TWO CHILDREN WERE KILLED

Police say Dempsey fatally shot her mother, 55-year-old Valerie DeBoe, inside the family home.

She then left the house with her three children.

Later that morning, investigators say Dempsey fatally shot her 4-year-old and 4-month-old daughters.

She also attempted to shoot her 2-year-old daughter but missed.

The surviving child was eventually rescued and is reportedly now in good health and staying with relatives.

Dempsey then died by suicide.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE DAYS BEFORE?

Police have described the investigation as extremely complex.

Authorities have also said there were indications that mental illness may have played a role, with investigators examining Dempsey’s behavior and communications before the killings.

But investigators have not presented the earlier domestic disputes as a complete explanation for the killings.

Police say the 2-year-old was targeted but was not struck.

She was later found safe and is now reportedly being cared for by relatives.
