Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges in Brian Thompson Killing

Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to two federal charges related to the December 4, 2024, killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

The two federal charges are:

• Interstate stalking resulting in death
• Stalking resulting in death through the use of interstate facilities

During the hearing, Mangione admitted that he shot Thompson in Manhattan. However, an important distinction is that he did not plead guilty to a federal murder charge. His guilty plea was specifically to the two federal stalking charges.

The plea represents a significant development in the federal case, but it does not resolve the separate criminal case Mangione faces in New York state court.

Mangione continues to face a state murder charge in New York stemming from Thompson’s death. His state trial is currently scheduled to begin on September 8, 2026.

His attorneys are also seeking to have the New York state prosecution dismissed, arguing that continuing the case after the federal proceedings would violate the constitutional protection against double jeopardy.

The legal battle could therefore continue even after Mangione’s federal guilty plea. Prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to argue over whether the state prosecution can proceed independently from the federal case.

Thompson was fatally shot in Manhattan on December 4, 2024, in a killing that generated widespread attention and sparked intense public discussion surrounding the U.S. healthcare system.

Mangione’s federal plea establishes his admission to the conduct covered by those charges, while the separate New York murder allegation remains unresolved. The state case will ultimately depend on further court rulings and the evidence presented through the legal process.
