FINLAY TARLING, 19, DIES AFTER TRAGIC CRASH DURING PORTUGAL CYCLING RACE

The cycling world is mourning the death of Finlay Tarling, a promising Welsh rider who died at just 19 after a serious crash during Stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal. Race organizers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation confirmed his death.

 TRAGEDY DURING THE RACE

Tarling was competing for the NSN Development Team in the 166.8-kilometer stage between Melgaço and Fafe when the fatal incident occurred.

Reports citing Portuguese sources say a vehicle that was not part of the race entered the course in the opposite direction and collided with Tarling. The precise circumstances remain under investigation, and some early reports have differed on the vehicle’s movements immediately before the collision.

Despite emergency medical efforts, Tarling died from his injuries.

Born in Ceredigion, Wales, Finlay was regarded as one of Britain’s promising young cycling talents.

He competed for Great Britain on both road and track and was particularly recognized as a time-trial specialist. This summer, he finished third in the under-23 time trial at the British Championships.
