FROM WATERFRONT LUXURY TO AN OCEAN COUNTY JAIL CELL — GRANDFATHER CHARGED AFTER TWO GRANDCHILDREN DIED

A quiet summer evening on the Jersey Shore ended in unimaginable tragedy.

Now, less than a month after the crash, 64-year-old Stephen Schneider of Bayville, New Jersey, has surrendered to police and been taken into custody in connection with the deaths of his two young grandchildren.

THE BOAT RIDE THAT ENDED IN TRAGEDY

On the night of July 19, Schneider was operating a roughly 30-foot Tidewater boat in Barnegat Bay when it struck an Intracoastal Waterway channel marker.

The impact sent 9-year-old Mya Bella Golabek and her 7-year-old brother, Sigmund “Siggy” Paul Golabek, into the water.

Schneider and his wife helped pull the children from the bay.

Both children were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

 NOW COMES THE CRIMINAL CASE

On August 14, Schneider voluntarily surrendered at the Berkeley Township Police Department.

He was subsequently lodged in the Ocean County Jail pending a future court hearing.

Authorities have charged him with:

Two counts of second-degree reckless vessel homicide/death by vessel

Operating a vessel under the influence

Reckless operation of a vessel

Police say Schneider was impaired by alcohol when the crash occurred.

THE WATERFRONT HOME DETAIL

Public records reviewed by media outlets show Schneider lives in a waterfront Bayville property valued at around $1 million.

That detail has become a striking contrast in the story — from a waterfront home and summer boating lifestyle to an Ocean County jail cell.

But the property itself is not evidence of wrongdoing.

The focus of the criminal case is what happened on Barnegat Bay that night.

Mya and Siggy were remembered by their family as exceptionally close siblings.

Their obituaries described a brother and sister who shared sports, swimming, family adventures and countless memories.

Mya was remembered for her love of art and athletics.

Siggy was described as a sports lover who enjoyed baseball, basketball and time with family and friends.

For their relatives, the legal case is only one part of an enormous personal loss.

 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Schneider has been charged, but the allegations remain allegations.

A criminal charge is not a conviction, and the evidence will ultimately be tested through the court process.

His next court proceedings are expected to determine how the case moves forward.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

 ONE BOAT TRIP.

 TWO CHILDREN LOST.

 FOUR CRIMINAL COUNTS FILED.

A GRANDFATHER NOW IN OCEAN COUNTY JAIL.

AND A FAMILY LEFT ASKING HOW A SUMMER NIGHT ENDED THIS WAY.

The most painful question may be the simplest:

How did a family boat trip become a tragedy that changed two families forever?
