AFTER THE WHOLE-LIFE SENTENCE: WHAT REALLY AWAITS JAMIE VARLEY INSIDE PRISON?

AFTER THE WHOLE-LIFE SENTENCE: WHAT REALLY AWAITS JAMIE VARLEY INSIDE PRISON?

Jamie Varley has now entered the final chapter of a case that shocked Britain.

The former teacher, 37, was handed a whole-life order after being convicted of murdering and sexually abusing 13-month-old Preston Davey.

The sentence means Varley will remain in prison for the rest of his life.

BUT WHAT IS HAPPENING TO HIM BEHIND BARS?

Since Varley’s conviction, dramatic claims have circulated online suggesting that he has been targeted by other prisoners, placed in solitary confinement or become the subject of a prison “manhunt.”

But there is an important problem with those stories.

They have not been established by reliable evidence.

In July, Full Fact specifically investigated claims that Varley had been stabbed in prison and reported that the Ministry of Justice confirmed he had not been attacked.

That makes the latest claims about secret retaliation and alleged inmate messages especially difficult to verify.

 WHAT WE DO KNOW

The court found that Preston suffered prolonged physical, sexual and emotional abuse during the four months he was in Varley’s care.

Lancashire Police said the Home Office post-mortem identified 40 traumatic injuries, including extensive bruising and internal injuries.

Varley was convicted of murder along with multiple child-cruelty, sexual-offence and indecent-image offences.

On June 18, he received a whole-life order — meaning there is no ordinary parole release waiting ahead.

Online discussion has increasingly focused on whether Varley is safe inside prison.

But the confirmed evidence from the trial paints a much more disturbing picture.

Preston was repeatedly injured while in the care of the two men.

He was taken to hospital several times before his death, including after suffering a fractured arm.

On July 27, 2023, he was brought to hospital unconscious and in cardiac arrest. He was later pronounced dead.

The post-mortem concluded that Preston died from an acute upper-airway obstruction.

The truth is that much of Varley’s day-to-day prison life is not publicly documented.

Prison authorities determine appropriate security arrangements and accommodation based on individual assessments.

Unless those authorities confirm a particular incident, claims about attacks, solitary confinement or secret inmate communications should remain unverified.

WHAT IS CONFIRMED: A WHOLE-LIFE ORDER.

WHAT IS CONFIRMED: NO ORDINARY PAROLE RELEASE.

WHAT IS CONFIRMED: PRESTON’S DEATH FOLLOWED MONTHS OF ABUSE.

WHAT IS NOT CONFIRMED: A SECRET PRISON “MANHUNT” OR RETALIATION CAMPAIGN.

The most important story is therefore not an alleged prison revenge plot.

It is the fact that 13-month-old Preston Davey will never get the life he should have had.
