Jamie Varley has now begun the life that awaits him after receiving one of England’s harshest possible punishments.
The 37-year-old former teacher was given a whole-life order for the murder of 13-month-old Preston Davey.
That means he will remain in prison for the rest of his life, with no ordinary possibility of release on parole.
HMP WAKEFIELD
Varley was taken to HMP Wakefield, a high-security prison in West Yorkshire, following his sentencing.
His arrival has generated intense discussion about what life could look like for a prisoner convicted of such serious offences.
A former prisoner has spoken publicly about the potential dangers Varley could encounter behind high-security prison walls.
But there is an important distinction:

Varley was convicted of murdering and sexually abusing Preston, whom he had been in the process of adopting with his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley.
Prosecutors presented evidence of more than 40 separate injuries suffered by Preston during the four months he was in their care.
The court found Varley responsible for Preston’s murder as well as sexual offences, child cruelty and offences involving indecent images.
PRESTON WAS ONLY 13 MONTHS OLD
The focus on Varley’s prison life should not overshadow the child at the centre of the case.
Preston had been described as healthy and happy during his time in foster care.
After being placed with Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley, the evidence showed a devastating deterioration.
A Home Office post-mortem identified 40 traumatic injuries, including extensive bruising and a non-accidental fracture. Preston ultimately died from an acute upper-airway obstruction.
WHAT REALLY HAPPENS TO VARLEY NOW?
That remains largely a matter for prison authorities.
His security classification, accommodation, movements and any additional protective measures can change according to assessed risks.
