The attack happened at approximately 2 a.m. Monday, August 17, inside the fast-food restaurant on Eighth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

The teenager was reportedly sitting inside the restaurant and eating when he became involved in a brief verbal exchange with another man.

Moments later, the tourist was stabbed in the rib cage and back, according to sources familiar with the incident.

POLICE ARREST SUSPECT AT THE SCENE

Officers responding to the restaurant arrested 25-year-old Juan Mercedes, who is from Port Charlotte, Florida, authorities said.

Mercedes was charged with second-degree assault and was being held pending arraignment.

The charge is an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Law enforcement sources described the attack as largely unprovoked, although they said the two men exchanged words shortly before the stabbing. Investigators have not publicly disclosed what was said or what prompted the confrontation.

VICTIM RUSHED TO HOSPITAL

Emergency responders transported the Australian tourist to Bellevue Hospital after the attack.

He was reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities had not publicly released the victim’s name as of the latest reports, and additional details about his trip to New York City were not immediately available.

The stabbing occurred in a heavily traveled section of Midtown Manhattan, only a short distance from Penn Station and the surrounding Eighth Avenue corridor.

Police continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation after taking Mercedes into custody.

Investigators are expected to examine witness accounts and other available evidence as they work to establish exactly what happened inside the restaurant and what led to the violent encounter.

At this stage, authorities have not announced additional suspects or indicated that anyone else has been charged.

The case is expected to move forward through the Manhattan court system following the suspect’s arraignment.

For the young Australian tourist, what began as an ordinary stop for food during a visit to New York ended with a trip to the hospital.

For investigators, the central question now is what caused a brief encounter between two strangers to escalate into a stabbing inside a busy Midtown restaurant.

The investigation remains ongoing.

This is a developing story. Details may change as authorities release additional information and court proceedings continue.
