California Man Pleads Guilty After Video Shows Him Kicking Sea Lion at La Jolla Cove

An 18-year-old La Jolla man has pleaded guilty after being filmed repeatedly kicking a California sea lion at La Jolla Cove in San Diego.

The incident occurred on July 22, 2026, when a man was recorded kicking the sea lion as the animal attempted to escape.

Because California sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the footage prompted a federal investigation by NOAA Fisheries’ Office of Law Enforcement.

The person seen in the video was initially unidentified. On August 14, the Los Angeles Times reported that authorities had identified him as Tyler Muehl, 18, of La Jolla.

Muehl subsequently pleaded guilty to violating federal protections for marine mammals. During the proceedings, he admitted to kicking the sea lion four times.

His sentencing is scheduled for October 20, 2026.

Muehl faces a maximum potential penalty of up to one year in federal prison and a $100,000 fine.

The case highlights the legal protections afforded to marine mammals in U.S. waters. Under federal law, members of the public are prohibited from harassing, harming, or otherwise disturbing protected marine mammals.

The incident also drew attention because the sea lion was reportedly trying to retreat while the attack was being recorded.

Muehl’s guilty plea means he has admitted to the conduct underlying the federal charge, while the court will determine his sentence at the October hearing.
