Iowa Couple Charged After 13-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Locked in Bedroom Without Food or Water

13-Year-Old Girl Found Severely Malnourished After Allegedly Being Locked in Bedroom
Police launched an investigation on August 11, 2026, after receiving a report that a 13-year-old girl was missing.
Authorities later found the girl suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration. She reportedly weighed approximately 78 pounds (35 kilograms) at the time she was discovered.
According to court records, the girl told investigators that she had climbed out of her bedroom window in search of food.

Police reported disturbing conditions inside the bedroom. The door was reportedly locked from the outside, while the window had been secured with screws. Investigators also found that the room did not have a toilet.
The girl’s alleged guardians, 45-year-old Brandon Myers and 45-year-old Emily Myers, were arrested and charged with child endangerment causing injury.
According to statements contained in court records, the couple allegedly locked the girl inside the bedroom every night without providing food or water.
The girl’s condition prompted an investigation into how long she had allegedly been kept in those circumstances and whether additional neglect or abuse occurred.
The charges against Myers and Myers are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the girl’s treatment and the events that led to her escape.
