FLORIDA BIOLOGY TEACHER SUED BY FORMER STUDENT AFTER SEX CRIME CONVICTION
TAMPA, FLORIDA — A former Florida high school student is suing his biology teacher, alleging that she sexually abused him while he was underage and left him with lasting psychological trauma.
The lawsuit was filed against 28-year-old Brooke Anderson, who is currently serving a 30-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to multiple sex crimes involving the student.
FROM CLASSROOM INTERACTIONS TO ALLEGED ABUSE
According to the civil complaint, the student’s relationship with Anderson initially appeared ordinary.
The student reportedly spent time in Anderson’s science classroom during lunch while attending Riverview High School in Tampa.
The lawsuit alleges that the relationship changed as he entered his junior year, when Anderson allegedly began sending sexually explicit messages.
According to the complaint, the communications continued and became increasingly inappropriate during his senior year.
The lawsuit further alleges that Anderson sent sexually provocative images to the student in April 2025.
The following month, the student alleges, Anderson sexually assaulted him inside her classroom.
CRIMINAL CASE PRECEDED THE LAWSUIT
The civil case comes after Anderson’s criminal prosecution.
She was convicted in 2026 after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including three counts involving unlawful sexual activity with the student. She is now serving a 30-month prison sentence, according to the report.
The student was below Florida’s age of consent at the time of the alleged abuse, according to the lawsuit.
His attorneys argue that Anderson’s criminal conviction strengthens the civil case and supports the allegations of misconduct described in the complaint.
STUDENT ALLEGES LASTING PSYCHOLOGICAL HARM
The lawsuit seeks $100,000 in damages from Anderson.
The former student alleges that the abuse caused permanent psychological injuries and significantly affected his personal life and religious beliefs.
Among the allegations is that the experience contributed to a loss of faith.
The complaint describes the alleged abuse as having consequences that extended well beyond the time Anderson was in contact with the student.
SCHOOL DISTRICT ALSO SUED
The lawsuit also names the Hillsborough County School Board, seeking an additional $50,000.
The student alleges the school district was negligent in allowing Anderson to work at the school and failed to prevent the alleged misconduct.
The school board has declined to comment publicly on the allegations, according to the report.
Anderson has not publicly responded to the civil lawsuit.
QUESTIONS ABOUT TRUST AND SCHOOL SAFETY
The case is now moving on two separate tracks.
Anderson is serving her criminal sentence, while the civil lawsuit seeks financial damages for the alleged harm suffered by the former student.
The allegations have also renewed difficult questions about the boundaries between teachers and students, particularly when inappropriate communication begins outside the classroom and develops into alleged sexual abuse.
For the former student, the lawsuit is an attempt to seek accountability for what he says happened while he was still a teenager.
The criminal case has already resulted in a prison sentence. The new civil lawsuit now puts the alleged long-term consequences—and questions surrounding the school district’s responsibility—under a different legal spotlight.
