Karmelo Anthony SEEKS NEW TRIAL AS JUDGE IS REMOVED FROM CASE

FRISCO, TEXAS — The legal battle surrounding Karmelo Anthony took another dramatic turn Wednesday as the judge who presided over his murder trial was removed from the case while Anthony’s defense team pushed for a new trial.

Anthony, now 19, was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison for the killing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet last year.

The latest hearing drew supporters of Anthony to the courthouse, with dozens gathering inside and outside. Some supporters could be heard chanting “Free Karmelo!” in the parking lot.

DEFENSE ARGUES FOR A RETRIAL

Anthony’s attorneys argued that the original trial was affected by what they described as overly restrictive courtroom rules imposed by Judge Angela Tucker Roach.

The defense also raised concerns about an interview Roach gave after the trial.

At Wednesday’s hearing, the interview was played for the court. Roach was asked whether she believed the jury had “got it right.”

The defense is seeking a new trial and argues that the judge’s conduct and decisions during and after the proceedings warrant further review.

ANTHONY APPEARS IN COURT

Anthony attended Wednesday’s hearing wearing a green jail jumpsuit.

His parents were present, as were Metcalf’s parents, bringing both families face-to-face again during another major stage of the case.

The courtroom was surrounded by heightened public interest as supporters gathered to voice their opposition to Anthony’s conviction.

NEW JUDGE EXPECTED THURSDAY

The removal of Roach means another judge will oversee the next stage of Anthony’s legal challenge.

A new judge is expected to be assigned for Thursday’s hearing, when the court will continue considering Anthony’s request for a retrial.

The hearing could become an important moment in determining whether Anthony receives another opportunity to challenge the conviction that sent him to prison for decades.
