Judge Removed From Karmelo Anthony Case Ahead of New Trial Bid

Judge Recused From Karmelo Anthony Case After Commenting on Jury’s Verdict
Judge John Roach Jr., who presided over the trial of Karmelo Anthony, has been recused from further proceedings in the case.
The decision was made by Judge Sid Harle following a request from Anthony’s attorney seeking a change of judge. One of the key issues cited was an interview Roach gave after the trial in which he reportedly stated that the jury had reached the correct verdict.

Anthony’s legal team argued that the judge’s public comments could raise concerns about his impartiality as Anthony pursues further legal challenges.
Judge Michael B. Chitty will now oversee subsequent proceedings while Anthony seeks a new trial.
Anthony was convicted in connection with the killing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf and was sentenced to 35 years in prison in June 2026.

The recusal does not overturn Anthony’s conviction or sentence. It means that any further proceedings in the case, including consideration of his request for a new trial, will be handled by a different judge.
Anthony’s legal team continues to challenge the outcome of the original trial, while prosecutors maintain the conviction.
The case remains active as the court considers Anthony’s request for a new trial.
