EIGHT DAYS OF SEARCHING. ONE DEVASTATING DISCOVERY. LILY HOOPER FOUND DEAD

For eight days, Lily Hooper’s family held onto hope.

The 18-year-old experienced bushwalker disappeared on August 12 after leaving her home in Oakdale, New South Wales, for a solo hike in Nattai National Park.

Her car was later found near the Bonnum Pic Walking Trail, but Lily was nowhere to be found.

What followed was a massive search involving police, SES volunteers, Defence Force personnel and specialist rescue teams across some of the most difficult terrain in the Southern Highlands.

Then, on Thursday morning, the search finally located Lily.

But the news that reached her family first was wrong.

At around 11:30 a.m., search volunteers reported that Lily had been found in dense bushland.

The information was initially interpreted as meaning she was alive.

That message travelled through the emergency response chain — and even reached NSW Premier Chris Minns, who told Parliament that Lily had been found alive.

Then, within roughly ten minutes, the search team provided a clearer report.

Lily was deceased.

The devastating correction meant Lily’s family experienced a brief moment of overwhelming hope before being confronted with the truth.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has since issued an unreserved apology to the family over the communication failure. Authorities have also announced a review of what happened.

More than 1,000 personnel were involved in the wider search operation, with crews battling dense vegetation, steep drops and exceptionally rugged terrain.

Lily’s family had repeatedly thanked emergency workers and volunteers while asking the public not to enter the dangerous search area themselves.

For eight days, they waited for the words they wanted most:

“We found Lily.”

Instead, they ultimately received news no family ever wants to hear.

QUESTIONS NOW REMAIN

Police have not publicly established the cause of Lily’s death.

A report will be prepared for the coroner, while authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death.

Police have not indicated that foul play is suspected.

Lily left home for a hike.

Her family waited.

Hundreds — eventually more than a thousand — people searched through the wilderness.

And after eight days, Lily was finally found.

But the moment her family had prayed for came with heartbreaking news.

She was only 18.

The search is over.

But for Lily’s family, the real journey through grief has only just begun.

The circumstances and cause of Lily Hooper’s death remain subject to investigation and a coroner’s report.
