BORN WITHOUT LEGS, A YOUNG GYMNAST’S EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE LEADS TO COACHING AND HEALING
When Paige Calendine was just eighteen months old, her parents enrolled her in gymnastics. They did not expect national medals or fame; they simply wanted their daughter, who was born without legs, to build physical strength and interact with other children. However, gymnastics quickly evolved from mere therapy into an absolute passion.

Growing up in Zanesville, Ohio, Paige learned to adapt complex routines that were never designed for her body. Performing flips, mastering uneven bars, and executing floor routines required her to invent brand-new techniques. Through unwavering dedication, Paige began competing in state and national events, winning numerous medals and trophies along the way.
Her inspiring story eventually reached a global audience. In 2024, Paige was invited to the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials in Minneapolis to participate in a “Gymnastics for All” exhibition, demonstrating how the sport could be adapted for athletes with disabilities. That same year, her life became the subject of the documentary Built Different, inspiring millions of viewers online.
As Paige grew older, competitive gymnastics began taking a severe physical toll, leading to intense pain. In 2025, at fourteen years old, she made the courageous decision to retire from competitive gymnastics. Rather than quitting sports entirely, she embraced new challenges by joining her school’s cheer, swimming, basketball, and football teams.

Today, Paige has returned to her original gym as a coach, guiding young children through their first steps in the sport. Looking ahead, her ultimate dream is to become a pediatrician. Paige entered the gym simply to gain strength, but she ended up redefining who belongs in sports—proving that redefining possibility is far greater than any medal.
