BLACKPOOL, England — The final months of Preston Davey’s short life have now been reconstructed through a remarkable collection of medical and digital evidence.
Preston was only 13 months old when he was brought to Blackpool Victoria Hospital on July 27, 2023, unconscious and in cardiac arrest.
His prospective adoptive father, Jamie Varley, initially claimed the toddler had accidentally drowned in a bathtub.
But forensic evidence ultimately contradicted that account.
Prosecutors established that Preston’s cause of death was acute upper-airway obstruction, and a post-mortem examination found approximately 40 traumatic injuries sustained while he was in the care of Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley.
Varley was later convicted of murder and multiple other offenses. McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of allowing Preston’s death, child cruelty and sexual assault.

JULY 27: THE FINAL RECORDING
At approximately 4:45 p.m. on July 27, Varley’s phone recorded Preston in severe respiratory distress.
According to evidence reported by Sky News, the 35-second recording showed the child struggling to breathe and making an agonal gasp.
That timestamp became one of the most important pieces of evidence in reconstructing Preston’s final hours.
Approximately two hours later, Preston was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
He was unconscious and in cardiac arrest.
Medical staff attempted to save him for nearly an hour.
But at approximately 7:20 p.m., Preston was pronounced dead.
He was 13 months old.
THE BATH EXPLANATION
Varley told hospital staff and police that Preston had been in the bath and had somehow become submerged.
But the forensic evidence did not support an accidental drowning.
